smileysal 3
Bloody hell, Nolly, at Hazleford Ferry. Did you ever go and visit him on his boat? Can't remember what kind it was, but it had huge radar things built into the main room (as you went on it) upstairs. That boat was one of the little boats used in the floatilla bringing people back from Dunkirk (the ww2 one when the rescued em from dunkirk). Think dad said the last he hear, Nolly's boat had sank. Not sure what happened to him, or his boat nowadays. May have to take a trip across and see if it was re-floated. That's a blast from the past reading about him. My dad used to be in Shirebrook, which was Brook Breakers. Mini Man was his handle. Can remember going across to Skeg one day to visit a guy from Shirebrook called Blue Mountain (his wife was called String of Pearls), and he had a huge aerial on top of his caravan at Ingoldmells. (Also had a burner under the cb in the caravan). He let dad go on it on one visit "one nine, one nine a copy" "any brook breakers out there?". then someone came on who was in Skeg itself telling dad that he was blanking out all skegness and the surrounding area. LOL. Good times they were. Remember each club used to have Treasure Hunts? Can remember driving through Crich with the Am rig in the car, and being followed by a police car, so dad had to get the AM one off it's rack, hand it to me, whilst I was getting the FM one out from under the passenger seat, and we did a swap, with me putting the AM one under the seat lol. Good and funny times.
Beefsteak 288
I never had the pleasure of visiting Nolly, Mick2me may have made the long arduous trek to Hazelford Ferry though. I was a regular late night breaker, as I was on late afternoon shifts at Pork Farms in those days. It was great late on , no peck heads around, we used to drive up to Dorket head and see who we could reach, on legal gear I spoke to Sheffield regularly , Manchester on one occasion too!! (On illegal stuff I spoke to some one in Saffron Waldon , Essex, with the handle of Rag top.!!) I went up there once on my motorbike (no mot, no insurance, no licence,) to meet my mate Murdock. It was thick with fog just as I was leaving a police car pulled up and asked what we were doing there at 4.00am . I told him that I was using the CB to see how far I could get late at night, he asked where I kept it , and not wanting to get Murdock into trouble (I didn't know whether he was licenced or not , (But he certainly had some naughty stuff in his car) I told the copper , "I've forgotten it , and am going home to fetch it" He laughed, but very kindly asked if I wanted an escort through the "Pea souper" . I said it would be OK and departed sharpish before he started to ask any more questions!!!
Cliff Ton 9,044
I was never into CB during its peak period but this thread has brought back a few memories. I lived at Clifton in the 1970s and the guy next door to us had a CB. I don't know anything about the technicalities of how they are set up or operate, but his could break through into our television or radio. It wasn't just interference, you could clearly hear every word he said and you could recognise the voice which was saying it; it was one step away from him being in the room. We never mentioned it to him but I reckon he would've been very embarrassed if he'd known how many people on our road were listening (unintentionally) to his conversations. In the middle of watching "The Sweeney" or "Columbo" you'd get this Nottingham voice pretending to be American using his talk-like-CB phrase book. Impossible to take seriously. The Engineer 489
Around 1983, some mates and I recorded "our version" of "The Curse of the Claw" (Ripping Yarns) onto an audio cassette tape then I hooked it up to my Dad's CB rig in Bulwell with his recently acquired 200W burner, pressed play and left it running for what was probably half an hour. He had been out and about somewhere near Derby and had picked it up loud and clear. I had a bit of explaining to do on his return to find the burner had sustained a bit of a meltdown inside. Obviously not rated for continuous transmission! Hey ho.

The Engineer 489
So, did anyone find my mag mount that came off the roof at about 70mph on Low Wood Road Bulwell (around 1973)? I was testing to see whether it would be OK at speed and hadn't really thought that one through (like, what will actually happen if it can't hold on). Made a nice dent in me boot on its way down. Can't remember what rig I had but me Dad had a Nato 2000 (lots of bells and whistles).
mick2me 3,014
Same thing happened to my mag mount which came off the boot of my MG Midget coming across Lady bay Bridge around 1982.

'84 , I was with you at the time !! (IMMSC it wasn't yours either) and it smashed the little light on top!!, didn't you try to stick it down with a piece of cloth to stop it scratching your boot , thus negating some of the magnetic strength !!
