Cliff Ton 10,007
I first became aware of him in The Navy Lark which we listened to religiously on a Sunday afternoon.
Jill Sparrow 9,670
My father, having served in the Navy during WW2, never missed that programme. He used to fall about laughing! I couldn't really see why. When I was learning to drive, aged 17, he frequently trotted out those phrases for which Phillips was so well known: 'left hand down a bit...' etc. Phillips was born in the same year as my father who would have turned 98 next week. Dad only made 81, so Phillips has nothing to complain about!

Oztalgian 2,922
RIP Sub-Lieutenant Phillips I used to enjoy listening to the Navy Lark on Sunday lunchtime. Along with many other roles he voiced the sorting hat in the Harry Potter films. The last surviving cast member is Judy Cornwell of Keeping up Appearances fame who played Wren Cornwell in one series. My favourite character was Leading Seaman "Taffy" Goldstein I just loved his Welsh accent.
