I'm the 'Futurist' that LizzieM referred to earlier. Joined the Fabulous Beatmen in the 60s as lead singer and spent 4 months at the Top Ten in Hamburg. Came back to tour the UK and released two recor

My head is buzzing with the fondest of memories of the Locarno - which we always still called 'the Vic'. I believe that the first time I attended was a Saturday afternoon session in the back end of 1

Having only last night discovered this amazingly nostalgic site myself - I've extended an invitation to my Brother Steve plus good friend Richard (Rock) Wheatley who played lead guitar with Tony and t

re Byards Leap, the story was some horse of that name was frightened by a witch and jumped some fantastic distance, there was mud and and normal footprints were seen, sort of : : : : :then : : : : : : : lol, the gap being some impossible distance. there are/were horseshoes set in the ground at start and finish of jump, said to be cursed and not to be touched, and theres our lot trying to prize them out of the ground! anyway we heard this creaking and out of the dark came some bloke in a wheelchair that we'd woken, finally he'd had enough of the row and called coppers, they followed us as 2 bikes left behind, they thought nicked, actually I think fritz's and johnny coombs? who had gone in some shed? with their girls

LMAO here......I think I missed that one but recall hearing about it now you've jogged my memory. So many things we got up to. I remember Saturday nites going to the White Post cause it was more fun than going home. I remember Beeston Youth Centre, The Santa Fe the El Toreador, Robins at Beeston, Middle gates. Touched a ton a few times down University Boulevard. OMG.great days. I'm only sorry I don't still have photos from that time. I know Paddy had a load, wonder if anyone else has?

Yea, The sheds, Robin's cafe, (wasn't his surname Whiteman?) and El toreador (Burton Street?) in town, heres a couple of more names, "Daddy" Vic, if still with us, as recall he had heart transplant or something, and PC Shirley, remember him at university gates, a right barsteward! managed to get myself banned (honest officer, the throttle stuck wide open) and by the time back on the road with a T120 scene had switched to White Hart at Lenton

Yup Robin Whiteman, Had a bro named John which I'm sure a few will remember. El T was on Burton St, next to the Blade club. Not sure what happened to Vic. P C Shirley. I think he LIVED to catch motorcyclists speeding. If I recall he caught Sambo a few times. LOL NOt without a good chase tho.A few more names here, Ace, Johhny Booth, Johnnie Walker, Paddy & Cranson of course, Jughead. By the time the White Hart was the main hangout I was night clubbing!!!

And Stan?...........Pfttttttttttttttt.....lol

As you seem to know just about everyone in Nottingham, what about Pete Coffey and John Hardy?

Iwent on a few occasions to the Locarno in 1960 and came across Pete and his gang at the lunchtime session. What a mob of thugs! He must have just been released from Jail after his part in the 1958 Race Riots.

Pete had the most amazing brain,he could have been anything he wanted, just seemed to run off the rails. Did you also know the singer with the gammy leg who appeared with the band at the Palais and also the Locarno? Can`t remember his name but he lived on the next road at Bilborough.

last mentioned name, he doesn't like that! Alan Justice was real name and his wife Diane, had a beer off on Oakdale Road for years, yes Shirley didn't like Sambo! (and vice versa) I remember we went to Skeggy one bank hol, camped on Ingolmels football pitch next day coppers en masse evicted us and sambo's bike 650 ajay/matchless wouldn't start, he had haversack full of bits, unbelievable, pistons, carb, con rods even a crank I think! remember he got this young thick copper to hold bare ht whilst he turned kickstarter! think he jumped higher than byard! we finished up at gibralter point in old pillboxs, sambo got his bike running and preceeded to turn local golf course into scramble course! In later years did you ever come across John Bowers ex manager of Tiffany's and I think Palais? he still has a vincent shadow, plus harley road king and triumph (me, jealous?)

Poor old Alan..ROTF.........Cranson nicknamed him that. Said he had ears like Toby jug handles. !rotfl! Anyway...I will never forget the sight of Sambo coming down the road to the Beeston Youth centre with his arm & leg in plaster casts riding that old Crapless......what a sight. It was after another of his many accidents LOL How he got away with it I will never know. He'd come all the way from Bridgford like that.....John Bowers.......Hmmmmmmmm. I dont think I knew him...........but what a lucky barsteward. Course you're not jealous..........lol

No Ashley, I never came across her. Was she at Raleigh? I think most big firms in those days had a punch room, did she work elsewhere?

I don't remember a band playing at the Locarno before we had the records start, I just remember dancing to records. I should imagine the Palais had a band though.

There was a band at the Locarno I worked there doing various jobs one of which was covering the piano & drums with a metalic type

plastic to make them glitter when the spotlight was on them The drummer worked at Hopewells during the day and the manager was

I'm new around here, but I have a couple of questions for PEMBERTON. First name Mick? Demon biker? Proud owner of a copy of the Big Bopper's rare "Chantilly Lace" album?

Thanks for the PM Icarus, I'm afraid I am not whom you think I am , I use pembertone as my on line name. My genre in music is the era you mention but mainly pure rock and roll, sorry to dissapoint.

Okay, thanks. I suppose that after almost forty years it was a bit of a longshot.

Anyone out there old enough to remember the best place to go in the late 50s and early 60s,not the Palais or Colmans or the Astoria but the Locarno on St Anns Well Rd.

Oh yes. I remember it well. Nipping outside on the fire escape for a smoke and a bottle of Home Stout we smuggled in from The Britannia Inn. Those were the days

Anyone remember the Nottingham boxer who used to be the doorman (bouncer) at the Lacarno in the early 60's. m His ring name was Johnny Carrington but I cannot remember his correct surname. He and his family were also barrow boys selling fruit/Veg from a barrow on St Peters Square and Broadmarsh area.

There was a bouncer on the door in the 60s called Bill Street. Does anyone remember him?
