Our girl is now 15, and has not had problems for a couple of years.

Before that it was a regular problem.

The main cause of spread, were parents that did not tackle the problem and allowed their kids to mix with others.

The other was the schools failing to acknowledge the problem and circulate warnings to parents.

I can remember getting the dreaded brown envelope in the early 50's. Mum with the fine tooth comb and newspapers on the floor and that horrible smelling white lotion plastered on my head. No one to play with for days, it was like you had the plague. Luckily I never got another one.

In Ucknall, nits were called "dicks" and anyone with the misfortune of having them had to visit the dick nurse at the awful welfare clinic on Watnall Road. The nurse was Miss Pearson, a dragon of a woman with the bedside manner of Dracula's mother.

It wasn't until some years later that "dick" was a singularly inappropriate term to use for nits.

Told today there is a new strain of head lice that’s resistant to shampoos & treatments, it’s left scientists scratching their heads
