Anyone see the fight last night between Willie Limond and Curtis Woodhouse ? both men in their mid 30s and they were a credit to Boxing, with their skill and sportsmanship.

Back in the mid eighties we used to got to the Astoria on Wed, Fri and Sat nights and the doormen were run by Stu Morris, is he still around? Others included Steve Sharp (who I worked with at the NCB), Raj and Steve Elliot.

Sunday lunches were always at the Variety Club listening to Barry St Ives, playing Bingo with Gordon, I still chuckle to myself when I think about Gordon's Bingo rules. Although these rules are, sadly, not fit to put into print if you were ever there you are certain to remember them.

Happy days!!

Hi Dave Stu Morris is still around and saw him only a couple of weeks ago.He is confined to a wheelchair now as he had a leg amputated a few years ago.

I knew Stu when he was a bouncer at the Brit and through his DJ'ing and his love of soul music.

Dave Spence (#29), there's quite a lot of threads regarding the Variety Club. If you use the 'Search' facility you'll be able to read them. Here's one for you that Dave48 put on, but make sure the kids aren't listening..lol. I've also added a post about my visit to the Variety Club.

I can remember Barry St. Ives playing in the pubs and clubs in Nottingham. If I remember rightly he always wore a sparkly, glittery jacket. One of the places he appeared at was the 'Log Cabin' at Watnall. Can anyone remember that place?. Regarding the Variety Club, I only went there once and what an experience it was. I never normally go for a drink at lunchtimes but some members of my close and outer family decided to go to the Variety Club one Sunday lunchtime. One of them had been told by a work colleague that it was a great place with singers, comedians and Bingo like you've never heard before. This particular Sunday I showered and, being a club, decided to wear a dark pinstriped suit, white shirt and a tie. When we all met up outside the club I was the only one dressed up with the others all being in casual clothes. They all had a laugh and joke about my appearance before we went into the club. As we stood in the queue to get in I realised I'd made a big, big mistake. There were people with bones through their noses and tattoo's on their faces and others in leather Hells Angels gear...and the men were just as bad. We went in and got a pint and I told the others that I wanted to stand near the back, as far out of the way as possible. I'm a pretty hard guy but that Sunday lunchtime I felt very vulnerable stood there looking like a tailors dummy. How wise I was to stand at the back because a stripper came on stage and shouted that she was looking for someone to 'assist' her. Oh, no!!! she's bound to spot me and drag me by the neck onto the stage. This chap, who looked as if he'd been a boxer (and lost every one) asked me why I was crouching down behind his legs and I quickly told him I'd dropped my lighter, even though I didn't smoke. When I heard the scream I knew the stripper had got someone to 'assist' her. I stood up to see the poor chap trying to lift her tits up from her waist with the help of some cream. Next on was a comedian who made Bernard Manning and Roy 'Chubby' Brown seem like angels. Despite that he was hilarious and I thought at the time that in a place like that you had to be to get out alive. Next came the Bingo and it was so funny. The caller would call out a number and include every swear word he could think of and get into a slanging match with the audience. The banter would last for ages before the next number was called. Then it started all over again with the next number. I remember thinking in the taxi going home, 'That was an unbelievable experience, but one I'll laugh about for the rest of my life'. Also, if I ever go to one of them places again I'll definitely leave the suit on the hanger.

I remember seeing Dave Needham working the door at Mortimers Cavern once, when some 6ft-plus drunk thought he would pick a fight with the little bloke on the door.

A few seconds later, the drunk was flat out on the floor. He'd not even seen the punch, never mind try to avoid it.

When following Forest away, we were often confronted by home supporters, but we'd all pick on the biggest. The remaining cowardly tw4ts soon scarpered.

I used to know a few bouncers around the clubs apperently 2 main people who were employing bouncers for hire were Richard and Chris Bailey known locally as the Bailey brothers. They were also had something to do with the Peggers inn in sneighton I think  if I remember they took over the Peggers Inn.

A freind of mine was DJ there not for long though.

A freind of mine used to manage the doors at Ritzy/ palias nightclub by the name of Mike last I saw him was around 2003.

Others bouncers there was 2 well known characters Lenny and Ticky if I remember correctly I saw Lenny working the doors at the Fountain opposite the dog and bear.

I did bump into a lady by the name of Maz she told me she also was involved in door security around Nottingham and even worked doors herself she lives in Mansfield.

I used to go to those boxing evenings at the Albany. Dinner jackets and a meal. It was called 'The Great International Sporting Club' promoted by Reg King. We used to get a comedian of the likes of Bob Monkhouse and Bernard Manning with some pretty blue jokes! Way beyond 12 years ago though.

Not Nottingham related but my husband used to go to those kind of boxing nights when we lived in Hertfordshire.   After one such event, in 1983, he announced he was going to Boston the next day to see a fight.  Naively I asked “Lincolnshire?”   No, he said ..... Massachusetts!
He joined a couple of hundred Tony Sibson supporters and flew from East Midlands Airport on a specially chartered plane to Boston.  Many of them were staying in a Holiday Inn near the airport and they went straight into the bar on arrival.  The place ran out of alcohol quickly and this lot, mainly from Sibson’s home town of Leicester, showed their disapproval by wrecking the bar and swimming pool area, throwing anything they could into the pool. The police were called which calmed the situation a little.  (As far as I know my husband was just an observer, I do believe him , he was embarrassed to be British that day ......)  Anyway, off they went to the fight,  Tony Sibson v Marvin Hagler, which Sibson lost.   The next morning the hotel and police arranged for a coach to come to the hotel and pick up the unruly mob and they were actually taken straight onto the airport runway and escorted straight onto the waiting plane, no messing about inside the airport building.  They wanted rid of them as quickly as possible. That was the last time my husband went to one of those boxing nights!

LizzieM.

This must have been in the 1970’s when my mum was a smoker. She said to me one day that she’d sent her zippo lighter back for repair as it was still guaranteed and was a bit miffed it hadn’t been returned several months on. After some investigation it turned out she’d sent it to Boston in Lincolnshire not USA. Never saw it again.

sadly Lizzie what you describe is too common nowadays,,,much more unusual in Tony Sibson's days (even in leicester),,,we did the security at many Boxing events and most of the crowd were well behaved,,,but the last few years seemed to attract the football hooligan type,,,who didnt really know anything about boxing.

The lads like the one's in the photo enjoyed their boxing,,,and in fact would often give their services for free at some Amateur schoolboy shows. Back then the majority of the Audience (not crowd) were knowledgable,,,and behaved in a gentlemanly way,,,

Very many years ago, when the Albany was a good hotel, we used to occasionally take the family to the 'Carvery' on a Sunday lunchtime. You just carved the joints and helped yourself to the vegetables. There was a chef on hand to sort out the joints if the previous carver had been a bit cack handed! I remember it being excellent value for money. We did stop over once on Saturday night after a flying club dinner. Never fit to drive home after those events! I also remember staying over at the Royal Hotel after an Accountants' Dinner. That was good as the room had a mini bar!
