Brew 5,007
"Never give up, never surrender". Boris claims his mission is 'largely finished'............. for now! I wonder what he has in mind next? Apart from his million pound book deal, what is he plotting for the future? He sabotaged Theresa May, can he outsmart Sunak?
Brew 5,007
I may have dreamed this, have I just read that a significant number want Johnson to retract his resignation?

Brew 5,007
I've read two quotes in the press. One said 65%, the other 85%, preumably of those conservative memebers able to vote in the election. The Mirror is quoting 'thousands', The Telegraph and Huffingfon Post are also reporting similar... I don't think it can happen, but it seems some members want his name on the ballot paper in order to re-elect him as leader. Perhaps he'll emulate Trump and storm parliament! Just as there was a rush to register for the Labour leadership, there is something similar happening for the Conservatives.
philmayfield 5,509
As a former Conservative I no longer know which party to support next time. It's a sorry state of affairs.

philmayfield 5,509
I'm not sure what they stand for but I gather they're a bit lefty. Nearby Southwell, oddly enough, seems to be a place for Lib. voters judging by the posters at election times.

Oztalgian 2,923
Looking at the UK press and reading about the cost increases in energy, food and groceries and other goods and services. I can sympathise with anyone on a fixed income but what is/can your new glorious do about it? Back in 1972 inflation was 7.13% and mortgage interest rates were 7.38%. I cannot recall a massive plea for government assistance for cost of living or did I miss it because I was too busy working all the overtime I could just to pay for the shopping, my gas and electric bills and the mortgage?
philmayfield 5,509
The economic situation is serious but it’s the tendency of the media to hype up every situation into a catastrophe these days.
Jill Sparrow 9,673
Back in the 80s, interest rates went up to 15%, which was painful for those paying mortgages... including yours truly! If that happened now, there would be riots. We just had to grin and pay up.
LizzieM 9,272
I totally agree Oz. Those of our age remember how our parents struggled, even if we didn’t actually realise it at the time. Nowadays folk expect everything on a plate, handouts, food banks and benefits for just about everything. We got a few pounds a week family allowance (but not for the first child I remember) I honestly think that we now have too many immigrants on our little island, all receiving benefits and hospital care. They all come here, have a load of kids and live off our tax money.
Cliff Ton 10,008
Bearing in mind most of the media is written by 'youngsters' who weren't around in the 70s when inflation was really high, or the 90s when interest rates were high. Most journalists today have never known inflation or interest at anything more than 3-4%.

Same here jill & when we found ourselves struggling with a toddler & only one wage coming in i took on a bar job three evenings a week to give us a bit of extra income. Wouldn't have dreamt of asking for handouts which is what everyone seems to expect nowadays.

Couldn't agree more lizzie & in my opinion its one of the reasons why our ex service personnel & oap's have to rely on charity to help them out in their time of need. Alpha 166
I agree with LizzieM regarding the immigrant issue, far too many for a small island. How many of the refugees/immigrants do the do gooder's invite into their homes or would offer to feed and accommodate them? As for the interest rates of the 80/90's I remember 17% at one time. The pre-millenium's havn't experienced any real hardships yet, but that's soon to change.
Beekay 4,400
In my humble two pennorth, it's not Immigration but more of a case of Invasion.

woody 516
About time we started to repel boarders and not be such a soft touch. If they don't use the accepted way of requesting entry then the only action is to send them on an immediate return journey.

I get a pension from my time working in the UK but the Australian government deducts it from the the "part pension" I get as my assets that I have worked and saved for during my working life are too high for a full pension.
Oztalgian 2,923
So, Mary Elizabeth Truss is the new glorious leader. Looking from afar it seems as if she blows around in the wind and changes her views to suit the next stage in her political ambitions. I have a funny feeling that she cannot be doing that now she is Prime Minister. If the party does not unite behind her she will not last long before the knives are out and perhaps Boris will be resurrected as a born again Messiah. Meanwhile on the other side of politics does Labour have anyone who is capable of cutting through after the dismal failure of Comrade Corbyn and the invisible Keir Starmer?
