Mess 609
One of my dear late dad's party pieces was for him to sing the introduction to Day-O (The Banana Boat Song) much to the amusement of my cousins. RIP Harry
Cliff Ton 10,435
One of my earliest memories of hearing anything on the radio with the Light Programme. I was always fascinated by Banana Boat Song because I could never understand what he was saying or singing about.
MRS B 490
I loved “ Island in the Sun” myself. Talking about radio, I can remember being glued to the radio I think on FM on the police frequency. Many moons ago. You had to get the dial just right to catch the signal. Far more exciting than TV. Oztalgian 3,217
The soundtrack of my youth grows ever quieter with the death of Harry Belafonte, singer, consummate actor, and a giant of equal/human rights. Of course most famous for The Banana Boat Song and his album Calypso was the first in the USA to sell a million copies. I can't listen to the Banana Boat Song without thinking of this Morecambe and Wise sketch with Nina of Nina and Fredrick fame.
