Over here, freeways are marked with mile markers viewable from the air, a spotter plane will clock you going through those markers and calculate your speed, they then radio it in if you're speeding, to a patrol car further down the road, where you'll be stopped and booked. Luckily, it's expensive to operate this kind of speed trap and is rarely used these days.

But anyone who holidays over here and hires a car to tour with, should keep their eyes open for a small aircraft flying over the freeways.

Volunteers only report speeding drivers, prosecutions cannot follow. Speed guns are usually old defunct units like the LT 20/20 in the picture.

If excessive speeding is reported, you could get a nice letter from the plod with an imaginary slap on the wrist. Nothing else.

That made me laugh Mick, the Police Chief claiming it pretty efficient, how many miles per gallon does a small plane use???, then add to that one highly paid pilot, his "grunt" who clocks your speed, plus two patrol cars waiting down the road with two overpaid, over weight donut eaters..

A lot cheaper with one cop, car and radar unit plus another one down the Hwy ready to pull you over, less fuel, less over paid donut eaters..

Helicopters cost a fortune to keep flying, they are heavy on maintenance and heavy on fuel, then at least one highly paid pilot.

I read somewhere recently in perhaps twenty or so years time telematics will be used automatically to detect driving infringements, then a automated fine will arrive in the mail for you.

No speed cameras, no helicopters or nosy volunteers either, all done by computer ! noblue
