.... 23
Right. I think I may have finally pieced this together (in true Inspector Rebus style!) Motown started in 1959. The Beatles admired and covered The Marvelettes' Please Mr. Postman. The only two names I know from The Marvelettes are: Gladys Horton and Georgia Dobbins Am I close? Beefsteak 305
Also Martha Reeves and the Vandellas became Martha and the Vandellas
Craig Strongman 13
Also Martha Reeves and the Vandellas became Martha and the Vandellas Beefy, it was actually the other way round, Martha and The Vandellas, became Martha Reeves and......etc...... But Yes! you got it, she was a receptionist/secretary at Motown in the early days, Stu, not that you are wrong at all about the Marvellettes being covered, but it was Barrett Strong's "Money" that was around in '59 that they did, Marvellettes were a bit later with "Postman" Right, come on lads, gizzabreak........some one else set one! Beefsteak 305
More of a guessing game for you this one. Here goes, which recent British soul singer, who had started his career in a different style of music, did I have singing one of his big hits on my karaoke system in Ibiza in the summer of 1997? There might be too many clues there already
.... 23
I hear that Rik Waller is now touring with a soul band?

Beefsteak 305
The year was 97 He is still active although U.S. based now (I am pretty sure about that) The colour of his skin don't matter it's what comes out of his soul that counts (He is black by the way)

Not that it has....................... I think you need to be a bit more forthcoming with the clues Beefy!
Beefsteak 305
O.K. Then ,he had an album out last year (he was hyped around the usual subjects to promote it) Not really noted as a soul singer, but the way the man sings..........if you can't get it now I'll get a snog from a flower

Beefsteak 305
Well in son First claim to fame, singing with Adamski (Killer) next claim to fame, singing a duet with me on 'Don't let the sun go down on me' Real nice bloke too (Any one who buys me a drink is my mate!) Your turn Mick
Craig Strongman 13
Seal eh........? I personally never thought of him as a soul singer in the strict sense of the word, what do you others think? To my mind, and you might disagree, but when you think of soul and motown, the likes of Otis, Stevie Wonder, Harold Melvin, Lou Rawls spring to mind, but not Seal im afraid. Or it could just be im pissed at myself for not getting the answer!!....No, joking apart, if others regard Seal as a soul man, ill go with the flow. PS to Beefy, the only reason i set my " who spilt the coke" question, was to totally baffle Stu, as he was getting the answers straight away, but was meant as a joke, as no one could possibly know who it could have been, and without clues, no one other than you would know who duetted with you on your karaoke without at least one clue to go with the question! Beefsteak 305
Sorry Craig I was just being light hearted I just thought I'd add a bit of joviality for others to have a go at instead of the usual suspects P.S. for a bonus point .Who came in the following week and was a right mardy bum and wouldn't get off his arse and give us a tune. You don't have to answer that cos it was Sean Mc Guire (A couple of minor hits mid 90's non that spring to mind) an actor who used to be in Grange Hill and that one about holiday reps (was it called sunburn?) Craig Strongman 13
Quite alright mate, all im after is a clue to start me/us off! Although i still dont think of Seal as a soul man!! Sean Maguire eh....wasnt he in Eastenders for a spell too...i seem to recollect interviewing him, similar time to a black girl who was there too, who signed me a cd album.......her names gone out me head tho'!! Michelle Gayle!! that was her! Erm, i seem to have misread the second claim to fame bit, as a second question !! Sorry!..Wanna set another one?
Beefsteak 305
I'm not too clever on soul as a specialist subject ,I'm a more general pop person I did find an interesting connection between Soloman Burke and a group who had a hit early seventies but I couldn't give any clues cos it would give it away, I have probably given it away already

My coat is already on... Did Sean McGuire play the young Irish character in East Enders? Bit of a footballer?
Beefsteak 305
Dunno He was in Eastenders though. He is a nice bloke, I just think he was scared of showing himself up whilst in the midst of his burgeoning pop career. (No reverb or that thing that straightens out bent notes that they are so fond of nowadays) I'm pretty sure he didn't have a hit after that . I will tell the full story in P.Ms only
