EMBANKMENT TOWER VISION REVEALED

09:00 - 11 April 2007

This futuristic tower may be oddly familiar to Evening Post readers.

It is the fourth design for the landmark centrepiece of the city's Ozone project.

And it incorporates elements the public liked best from the three earlier designs revealed in the Post.

More than 1,200 people aired their views on plans for a Victoria Embankment tower at a roadshow.

Their response encouraged Nottingham architect Julian Marsh to merge his water, sundial and tree tower designs into one.

His "fourth option" will stand at 60 metres and offer unparalleled views of the city and south Notts.

He said: "The things people said about the water tower was that they liked the lagoon. They like the fact it was colourful. For the tree tower people liked the position because it was away from the road."

His new design has now gone to the city council for planning permission.

The £9m structure will feature a funicular lift rising up the slope of the supporting tower to a viewing platform.

Around the tower will be a lagoon, restaurant, cafe, children's play area, exhibition space and meeting rooms.

The tower will produce at least 60% of its energy needs from the River Trent and the sun.

that it is hoped will turn The Meadows into a "carbon neutral" community.

The project is backed by Nottingham South MP Alan Simpson.

He said: "It will be fantastic for Nottingham. People will be able to come from around the country to admire it."

The design is expected to be entered into the Big Lottery's £90m Living Landmarks fund in May. theo.usherwood@nottinghameveningpost.co.uk

Isn't gunshot residue mostly carbon?

It reminds me of the time when Derbyshire County Council declared Derbyshire a "Nuclear free zone" untill they were reminded that Rolls Royce had a Nuclear Facility.

Who Votes for these people?

Yes....I remember that gem.

Wasn't it the Barmy Bookbinder?

Wonder what happened to him?

Genuine candidate to share a padded cell with Red Ken...

Cheers

Do you remember him hounding Alf Parrish the then Chief Constable, into the grave?

Mrs. Edwina Currie (Derbyshire, South):

The fact is that certain key people in our county hierarchy are deeply hostile to the police for political reasons. They believe that the police should be accountable. They want a police force and a chief constable who will do their bidding. All the financial and administrative procedures are designed to that end. We saw it during the miners' strike, when I had to insist to the Home Secretary that my working miners had full protection in order to exercise their right to work. We saw it during the hounding from office of Chief Constable Alf Parrish. The expenditure row was blown up out of all proportion and led to his early retirement, his subsequent breakdown, and his tragic early death- -a broken man--just a few months ago. That death should be on the consciences of Councillor Bookbinder, leader of Derbyshire county council, and his henchmen, for the rest of their lives.

Dear Raju and Jameson,OK Raju is wrong, but do we have to have this monstosity POLLUTING the appearance of the area?As to the cost,I can think of hundreds of more beneficial uses of such huge amounts of money. I suppose the steel as with the granite in the Square in Nottingham will have to be transported from China. It is important to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Recycling helps us do that by saving energy. Manufacturing with recycled materials, with very few exceptions, saves energy and water and produces less air and water pollution than manufacturing with virgin materials. (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) It takes 95% less energy to recycle aluminum than it does to make it from raw materials. Making recycled steel saves 60%, recycled newspaper 40%, recycled plastic 70%, and recycled glass 40%. (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) In 2000, recycling resulted in an annual energy savings equal to the amount of energy used in 6 million homes. In 2055, recycling is conservatively projected to save the amount of energy used in 9 million homes. (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) Me getting excited again about the Council wasting our money!

I`m trying to stir you all up on Nostalgia, with the elections soon. Forgive me for wanting some of Nottingham`s former status to be recaptured.

Dear Jameson, I am just about able to comprehend the difference between 9 and 40,and between a tower and a complete project. However with the way socialist bureaucracies spend tax payers' money I am not so sure that they can. As to hedge fund managers earning $20 million a week on Wall St. ,I agree this is beyond all reason., but at least their parasitic behaviour keeps the economy turning, unlike the millions of non productive parasites employed at all levels by the government to shuffle bits of paper to keep them off the dole queues, adding to the cost of what little we still produce, making those products uncompetitive. In my day,Nottingham used to be a great city. The tax alone contributed by Players, was calculated to pay for 1/3 rd of the annual NHS bill.OK we all now know the dire effects of smoking, but the wealth created in Nottingham was staggering. We now have 85 to 90% of the population in `service' industries!(whatever they are) My opinion is still that the tower is a banal eyesore and a future blot on the landscape.40 million would go a long way to solving Mr or Mrs C`s problems in the Meadows.(crime and social justice) :shout:
