For over 100 years the name has been known for making small size soldiers. It has 3 buildings in Nottingham that supply toy shops nationwide. C is for City When Queen Victoria had her diamond Jubilee is 1897 she let Nottingham become a city. D is for Desperate Dan Nottingham artist Dudley Dexter drew Desperate Dan – the pie eating cowboy in The Dandy comic. E is for Earthquake Nottingham recorded the first earthquake inn England, back in 1180AD F is for Football In 1880 a Nottingham man invented Shinpads for football players. G is for Galleries of Justice The Galleries of Justice offer a look at Justice down the ages. H is for HP Sauce A Nottingham shopkeeper invented the recipe for HP Sauce, but sold it to pay a debt. I is for Ice Arena Nottingham has a new National Ice arena thanks to £22.5million pounds from the lottery. It is going to be the national home for Ice Hockey, and will also have a museum of Britain’s greatest Ice Dancers, Nottingham’s own Torvill and Dean, achievements. J is for John The bell in the council house is named Little John. It is the deepest toned bell in England. It weighs 10 ½ tonnes. K is for Kings Many of the nations Kings stopped in Nottingham to stay at the Castle. L is for Lace Nottingham is famous for its lace, designed and made in the Lace Market. M is for Mayor Nottingham has had a Lord Mayor since 1284. N is for Notts County Notts County Football Club is the oldest football club in the world. It was formed in 1862. They play at the Meadow Lane stadium. O is for Old Market Square Nottingham’s Old Market Square is the biggest Market Square in Britain. It is 5.5 acres big. It used to be used to hold the annual Goose Fair on before it moved. P is for Peter Pan J.M.Barrie worked as a writer in Nottingham. His story of Peter Pan is based around a child he saw while walking in Clifton Grove. Q is for QMC Nottinghams main hospital, the Queens Medical Centre- or QMC-, contains the only medical school to be opened in the 20th Century. It has become famous for developing new treatments, and treated Prince Charles after he injured his arm in a Polo accident. R is for Railway In 1604 two miles of wooden track were laid between two coal mines, making the countries first railway line. S is for Smith, Paul Paul Smith opened his first shop in 1970. Before that he had worked in a Lace Market factory. Now a world famous fashion designer, he still has his warehouses and Headquarters in the city. T is for Tank A Nottingham man built the first Tank, but the War Office said it was too cranky. U is for University The worlds first genetically grown tomato was grown at Nottingham University. V is for Vivit Post Funera Virtus The City motto, included on the city coat of arms, is Vivit Post Funera Virtus meaning Virtue outlives death. W is for Water Sports The cities National Water Sports centre is at Holme Pierrepont. It has canoe courses, skiing areas as well as a large racing lake. Y is for Yew Yew trees can be found in local churchyards. The yew branch was the best branch for making longbows from.
