The Variety Club, Radford

Recommended Posts

Now theres a thing Radfordred.

Is the old variety club still there?

The last time I was in there was about 1970.

I remember the Organist getting up and going to the bar to get a pint.

The organ continued playing. I was amazed. :o

This was the coming of modern technology!

Me Dad took me to my 1st match stood in the TrentEnd 1974 lost 3-1 to Nowich City, I was well & truly hooked , he'd like this, got him on the TrentEnd wall.

Ten years ago today the last pint was pulled down the Variety! Made a mint on these T-Shirts!

So sorry to hear this news Nick, he truly was a legend in his own lifetime, so many laughs, so many misspent Sundays in Radford's most popular church. You take care of your Mum   Guess

yes the variety club is still there standing all on its own and strangely enough Gordon properly the organ play you was talking about and barmy bingo caller called it a day after 40 years , at the grand old age of 77 only last week there was not a dry eye in the club on his last ever Sunday dinner time show .

Must be one of the few last working mens type clubs left now.

And what a coincidence, the organist still there after all these years.

There was a similar WM club at Basford just opposite the gas works.

Can't remember the name of the road now?

Thanks for the picture too. Keep em coming. :D

Radford, Nottingham

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Radford is an inner-city area of Nottingham, located just outside the city centre itself. In recent years it has suffered from problems related to crime and anti-social behaviour (akin to the nearby district of Hyson Green), although there are signs that recent efforts by the authorities may be improving the situation.

The area has a large ethnic population (mainly Asian, West Indian, and, increasingly, African), and there are, accordingly, a large number of specialist food and retail shops catering to specific cultures. Due to the relatively cheap nature of housing in the area (and the large number of old Victorian properties converted into flats and bedsits), Radford has a large student population, most of whom attend the nearby Nottingham Trent University and University of Nottingham. Some local residents have expressed concerns over issues associated with studentification.

Raford was the home of Raleigh Industries once the world's largest bicycle producer and also of Players cigarettes. It provides the backdrop for much of Alan Silitoe's book "Saturday night and sunday morning". Numerous scenes from the film of the book, staring Albert Finney, were shot in Radford.

Radford is also the home of the burlesque comedy club The Variety Club. The club was famous for many years as the home of compere Gordon Cragg whose forty year association with the club ended with his retirement in December 2004. Along with his side kick Ossie, Gordon created a unique atmosphere that reqularly attracted coaches of visitors from as far as Wales and the north east of England.

Welcome csajcf you'll assured of a good day out then Frankie Allen your comic on that day a very funny scouse entertainer guaranteed to give you a dinner time filled with infectious laughter.

Plus Pav & Jesus will superbly be filling the giant boots left by Gordon & Oz with some crazy bingo as they have done since December 2004 .

The only other thing missing will be the original bingo board used for over 40 years by my legendary Father , that helped him drag us scabby arsed fuck3rs out of the p1ss soaked streets of Old Radford and now forms part of the decoration on my sh1t house wall .

PRICELESS

A Bog is not a Bog without chicken tiles!

That's only if you have some left after you've done the kitchen !!

The only chicken in my bathroom is tikka masala stuck at the back of the pan !!
