The coming of the railways to Nottingham

This Girder bridge crossing a cobbled street in Nottingham, circa 1897,

is typical of how the railways traversed old nottingham. Can you imagine

what it would be like to sleep in that top bedroom?

I thought at first this might be Arkwright Street looking south, but I am not so sure?

Any Ideas?

Can't be Arkwright Street as the Great Central didn't cross it until 1904/05...

Looks like a Midland Railway or Great Northern lattice overbridge...

Would seem to be a main road, judging by its width.

Would the first picture be of Canal street?

Bip.

Could well be Dennis...

When I checked that Arkwright Street had been bridged by 1897, the Canal Street option occured to me.

Although the design of the overbridge doesn't seem to be particularly in the Great Central style.

Cheers

no.1 def not canal street, that was a lattice type girder bridge but certainly GCR over meadows area, heading south from victoria first proper bridge was canal street, then bridges over station st, queen.s rd, crocus st, arkwright st, kirk white st west, and then over victoris embankment so take your pick! The only Midland bridge in the meadows was over meadow lane (leading to what is now LadyBay road bridge) and The GNR and LNWR ones over meadow lane west of the level crossing were nothing like that nor The Nottingham Suburban ones Trent Lane area

This is an old thread, but I've only just been reading it. According to the book 'Victorian Nottingham' volume 5 picture No 1 is in fact Queens Road.
