In the early 1960s the Beeb showed it as part of the 'Tales from Europe' series, splitting it into three parts. It was, as you discovered, broadcast with voiceover when the original soundtrack was faded down. There was a scary magical dwarf and a giant fish. I don't think anyone who watched it (or one of several repeats) will ever forget it.
The Engineer 528
How about The Magic Roundabout? When I was working as an spark's apprentice on a building site around 1974/5 the brickie's labourer nicknamed me Florence because I wore Doc Marten boots.
Cliff Ton 9,833
The Magic Roundabout was excellent. Like all good childrens' programmes it was clever because it worked on two levels. It had the simplistic side for youngsters, but also operated on another level for older people who understood the hidden references.
loppylugs 8,325
For some reason I think the M R had a bigger adult audience than kids. Where I worked it was often the topic of conversation. "Time for bed." said Zebedi.

Mess 503
Phil, I can just about remember Whirligig with Humphrey Lestoq. IIRC his catch phrase was goody goody gumdrops. He used to appear with a puppet called Mr Turnip. I think Annette Mills and Muffin were a separate programme. I saw an old clip of Humphrey Lestocq a few years back and he appeared very inebriated. Thoroughly at odds with the BBC standards of the 1950s.

Shirley Abicair was a pretty Australian girl who sang as she played a zither. She also told stories about a boy called Tumburumba. http://www.turnipnet.com/whirligig/tv/children/sabicair/sabicair.htm
Mess 503
This is one of the most enjoyable books I've ever bought. https://www.123pricecheck.com/p/books/the-golden-age-of-childrens-television/1852864079.html There are some very cheap copies on Amazon. katyjay 4,960
Little boy fishing off a wooden pier Come fish, bite fish, swim along here. Shirley Abacair's song. Didn't Annette Mills sit at a piano, with Muffin the Mule atop it? i seem to think Annette was the sister of another famous Mills man.
