Miss Nottingham competition

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,my first post on this forum.I moved to Naples Florida 5 years ago and this website has scratched an itch for me.I lived in Nottingham most of my life.

What I'd like to know is where I can dig up the names of previous Miss Nottingham winners, specifically 1987-1990.I knew one of the winners ,but can't for the life of me remember her name!!

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello thair CookieGuy please excuse the spelling mistakes I tend to make every so often I'm a little deaf don't you know.

Without doing a Mr G Oogle search I can't satisfy your request but I bet you any amount of rice pudding someone on here will fulfil your inquiry.

If you so wish you could tell us a little about yourself...like when and where you lived before disserting this septic isle of ours for blue skies, azure seas and cotton candy.

Do you like many expats suffer from Mushy peas syndrome whereas you can’t get any over thair.

Bip.

Any relation to the Cookie Lady of Malory Square, Key West, Fla , Fame ?

I knew a girl called Michelle Holmes (I think it was Michelle) who won in about 1980 and a girl called Debbie Roe who won in 1994/%

In reply to am I a " relation to the Cookie Lady of Malory Square, Key West, Fla",I am not, although I would love to be privvy to the reason she is famed!!!!

I lived most of my life in W.Bridgford and 5 years in Derby(not keen I'm afraid)

I decided I'd had enough of the taxes, immigration problems etc and figured I'd try Florida out for a while.

It has been a LOOOONG uphill struggle to forge ahead in business out here, but finally,a couple of months ago we received our greencards (the holy grail of all US immigrants!)

So here we are(me and the Mrs) enjoying a better class of misery in sunny Ol' Naples(looking out of the window,it's sunny and 84.Not bad for March!)

Back to the initial question,I'm looking for a name of Miss Nottingham approx 1987-1990.Her claim to fame was that she won the contest(At Ritzy's I believe) whilst she had a broken leg!Kinda narrows the search down slightly.

Yes I DO miss mushy peas and mint sauce.Other gaps in my life are,Mr Porky pork scratchings,Notts County(I know,I know!)midget gems(especially the black ones)proper teabags, fish and chips,a good old curry and the BIG one........a KEBAB!!mmmmmmm

I have noticed a member on here by the name of Craig Strong(man),I used to cut his hair(had a few barbers shops around Nottingham at one time)in the 1990's,I just wondered if he still has his 'porn star' moustache?

Great forum,I'll have to check in here often.

For Michelle read Susanne

If you are missing the mighty pies you ain't missing much .We're 3rd from bottom of the old 4th division at the moment.

The 'Cookie lady' of Mallory Square was (Or maybe still is) a part of the sunset show which involves buskers and market stalls as the sun goes down. She would ride up and down the square selling different flavour cookies from the basket on the front of her bike, what made her infamous was her cackle, which could only be described as witch like, and it scared the poo out of the little kids.

I was last there in 2002 and she was conspicuous by her absence and nobody new of her where abouts

Hey Adam: Sorry I can't help you with your search, but I followed a similar path to you - although I finished up in the frozen north! However, we can find "real" teabags in our local supermarket(s) - both PG Tips and Typhoo - as well as assorted other British foods including Marmite, Roses lime marmalade, Hob Nobs, Lyle's Golden Syrup etc.!

We know Naples a little - Mary's mom and stepfather spend their winters down there and we visit from time-to-time. We also have friends in Ft. Myers. Next scheduled trip is next Christmas - we'll have to get together for a beer!

I will check again in July, when we will spend three nights there.

Since I am looking for real estate in Florida, I would be interested in talking to you Adam.

Julie Cockayne was a little earlier than Cookie Guy is looking for (My era infact .Julie Cockayne was a mate of my big sister unless of course there were two)

Adam, funny you mention the "porn star" tash, as I just bumped into a couple of the Panthers shopping in Tesco in Toton, and theyre growing tashs like my old one, for the playoffs..........in case someone doesnt know, its a tradition that a beard or porny tash is worn during this period.

Hmmm, none of those names seem to ring any bells. For some reason I had the name Joanne in my head and her sister(who I knew better) was called Julie.

I think they may have lived around Mapperley/Carlton but my judgement is highly fogged by the increased intake of Snakebite around the time of the late 80's!

I'm sure the Nottingham Evening Post ran a piece about Miss Nottingham with a broken leg,but I'm jiggered if I can find it on the web.

If anyone closer to home has access to the N.E.P. archives, please dig away for the info.

PS I have no reason whatsoever to find the young lady in question, other than not being able to remember her name is bugging the hell out of me!! :)
