Nebuchadnezzar, King of the Jews

Bought his wife a pair of shoes;

When the shoes began to wear

Nebuchadnezzar began to swear

When the swearing had to stop

Nebuchadnezzar bought a shop

When the shop began to sell

Nebuchadnezzar bought a bell

When the bell began to ring

Nebuchadnezzar began to sing:

Updated twenty-eighteen    Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall Humpty Dumpty had a great fall  The structure of the wall was incorrect  So he got ten grand from Claims Direct

It must be 50+ years ago since I heard that one.       That's because we are.

It were me dad that made the fire It were me mam that made the tea It were me mam and dad that fell in love It were me mam and dad that made me It were me mam and dad that I was proud of It were

Thanks Compo and Beefsteak for prompting my memory with: 'Nebuchadnezzar, the king of jews' . . .

My grand-daughter (aged 5) is learning to skip (she did 12 jumps over the rope the other day and was thrilled - you should have seen the joy written on her face).

I'll teach her this old rhyme, hopefully she'll remember it when she's older then she'll be able to teach it to her children.

Such a lot of childhood rhymes were skipping rhymes weren`t they? So many come back to me. Such as -

There`s somebody under the bed

Whoever can it be?

I feel so jolly nervous.

(Friend`s name) come into me. (Friend jumps into the rope)

First I light a candle

Then I look under the bed.

Get out you fool!

Get out you fool!

There`s a monkey up your leg.

The words indicate actions and the skipping carries on with a new skipper ad nauseam.

Round:

Goodbye (friend's name),

while you're away,

Send me a letter,

To tell me that you're better,

Good bye (name),

While you're away,

Don't forget your old friend (next name in round).

Just remembered this one:

Dip dip dip my blue ship,

Sails on the water,

Like a cup and saucer,

And o-u-t spells

OUT!

One potato two potato three potato four

Five potato six potato seven potato more

O-U-T spells OUT!

Wasn't dip dip dip a skipping song, and you ran out of the rope on 'out' and someone else came in? I know the one potato was done with 2 fists turned sideways, stuck out front, and the 'boss' banged his fist along the line, and you put your fist beind your back if 'out' landed on it, till nobody was left. Not sure what the person 'left' did after that, LOL.

The very first 'Ditty' I heard at the age of 5 at Whitemoor was...

British Bombers Bombing Berlin Before Breakfast Begins.....and the war had been over 5 years.

Seeing as we did the nightime raids while the Yanks did the daylight ones...they were dead right.

Eany meany macaraca

Rara ria dominaca

chicaraca rollapaca

Pom pom push.

And you thought Bill and Ben talked jibberish!
