Rhymes from our childhood

Recommended Posts

We all chanted rhymes with our friends as kids, I wonder if they're still around? Here's one I remember.

Hark, hark the dogs do bark

The beggars are coming to town

Some in rags and some in bags

And some in a velvet gown

We've got chickens in our back yard

We feed them on Indian corn

Some lay eggs and some lay pegs

And some lay nothing at all

With a cock-a-doodle, cock-a-doodle

Lost the leg of me drawers

If you find them, will you kindly

Sew them on to yours

Me mum used to regularly say to us:

Don't care was made to care,

Don't care was hung,

Don't care was put in the pot,

And boiled 'till he was done!

No mention of Kitty McShane on the poster picture...his real life wife and on-stage daughter...

Saw them at the old Empire in the 50's. Even to a gullible 12 year old, it was like watching paint dry.

Have an inkling that the Charles of Charles and Jupp became Charlie Drake.

Cheers

It was a hot, cold day in the morning

The snow was raining fast

A bare footed man in wooden clogs

Came slowly whizzing past

He turned a straight crooked corner

And saw a dead donkey die

He took out his gun and stabbed it

And sent it bow-legged in one eye

Who remembers chanting this as school ended for the term.

No more days of school

No more days of sorrow

No more days in this old dump

And we'll have fun tomorrow

or this lovely little ditty

Everybody's doing it, doing it, doing it

Picking their nose and chewing it, chewing it, chewing it.

We three kings of orient are

One in a taxi, one in a car

One on his scooter, pipping his hooter

Following yonder star.

While shepherds washed their socks by night

All seated round the tub

The angel of the Lord came down

And gave them all a scrub.

From my Uncle George (Stu - he lived on Roscoe Avenue!)

Two ducks in front of a duck

Two ducks behind a duck

And a duck in the middle

- How many ducks?

There was a little man

And his name was Henry Ford

He got a little paper

And he got a little cord

He put them all together

In an old tin can

And would you believe it

The damned thing ran

Little birdie, flying high

Dropped a message from the sky

Eeew, said the farmer as he wiped his eye

It's a damn good job that cows don't fly.

If your Bob, don't give our Bob

The bob, that your Bob owes our Bob

Then our Bob will give your Bob

A bob in the eye.

Also on bonfire night or thereabouts, we sang

Bonfire night, the stars are bright

Two little angels dressed in white.

Seems a short verse, was there more?

Oh the yellow rose of Texas

And the man from Laramie

They went to Davy Crockett's

To have a cup of tea

The tea was so delicious

They had another cup

And left poor Davy Crockett

To do the washing up.

One fine day in the middle of the night

Two dead men got up to fight

Back to back they faced each other

Drew their swords and shot each other

We sang

Bonfire night, the stars are bright,

And all the little puppy dogs ,will have a fright.

Oh and you nicked my "little birdy flying high"poem. My dad used to chastise us ( even though it was him that told it to us) for saying DAMNED and insisted we said DARNED instead .Bless him, he also told us to "Bleddy well stop swearing" once ,oh how we laughed

Actually beefy, we said 'darned' now I come to think about it.

A couple of skipping songs

My mother said, I never should

Play with the gypsies in the wood

If I did, she would say

Naughty little girl to disobey.

Nebuchadnezzer the king of the Jews

Bought his wife a pair of shoes

When the shoes began to wear

Nebuchadnezzer began to swear

Variations on a theme?

Happy Birthday to you,

You belong in a zoo,

You look like a monkey,

And you act like one too!
