more tales from the late 60's early 7o's

Recommended Posts

started my club life with the dungeon where great acts like steam packet( long john, rod stewart, Julie driscoll) lead me to see Jimmy Cliff ,..Jimmmy James and the great Jimmy Hendrix at the beachcomber. Friday and Sunday nights were spent in the Brit, Boat and the Union clubs at Trent bridge. We all use to gather outside Saxones and get the bus down Arkwright street, past Selectadisc .The pigalle, colemans, flying horse, bodega and many more places would take mer down the nostalgic route...i then left nottingham for a student life in Manchester where i worked some of the best clubs in England..the twisted wheel. time and place and the legend that was Blinkers where George Best spent many an evening....Worked the Hippo club in 1971 and became part of the sandpiper, babel set ...would love to hear from anyone who has tales to tell .....ps am still into my music and the odd night clubbing!

Thank you lads and lasses for your comments. I couldn't have reached that illustrious total without the help of you lot, particularly the late-night crew on Word Association and Keep One Drop One ...

I suppose this is more late 50`s and 60`s than 70`s,but I thought it was pretty appropriate. -- Long ago and far away, in a land that time forgot, Before the days of Dylan, or the dawn of Camelot

Just interviewed Pete Groves who owned sandpipers .......amazing tales how the club went from a posh guys bistro in 1974 to,an iconic punk club ......

Oh yes Zak and Kurt "our mutual freinds" had a few clubs in their time , one by the station was about their last. Late 80's early 90's that would be (Next door to the police station) Didn't they call Babels, Micheal Issacs after Kurts son?

God yes! Zak and Kurt - I thought they were great guys and they ran a great club! It was smooth wasn't it!

Four guys tried to pick a fight with Bob Lord outside one night and he aske if they could just wait while he took of his watch! About a minute later four guys were laid out on the street and Bob never even got the watch off!

Long ago and far away, in a land that time forgot,

Before the days of Dylan, or the dawn of Camelot.

There lived a race of innocents, and they were you and me,

For Ike was in the White House in that land where we were born,

Where navels were for oranges, and Peyton Place was porn.

We learned to gut a muffler, we washed our hair at dawn,

We spread our crinolines to dry in circles on the lawn.

We longed for love and romance, and waited for our Prince,

And Eddie Fisher married Liz, and no one's seen him since.

;

We danced to 'Little Darlin,' and sang to 'Stagger Lee'

And cried for Buddy Holly in the Land That Made Me , Me.

Only girls wore earrings then, and 3 was one too many,

And only boys wore flat-top cuts, except for Jean McKinney.

And only in our wildest dreams did we expect to see

A boy named George with Lipstick, in the Land That Made Me , Me.

We fell for Frankie Avalon, Annette was oh, so nice,

And when they made a movie, they never made it twice.

We didn't have a Star Trek Five, or Psycho Two and Three,

Or Rocky-Rambo Twenty in the Land That Made Me , Me.

Miss Kitty had a heart of gold, and Chester had a limp,

And Reagan was a Democrat whose co-star was a chimp.

We had a Mr. Wizard, but not a Mr. T ,

And Oprah couldn't talk, yet, in the Land That Made Me , Me.

We had our share of heroes, we never thought they'd go,

At least not Bobby Darin, or Marilyn Monroe.

For youth was still eternal, and life was yet to be,

And Elvis was forever in the Land That Made Me , Me.

We'd never seen the rock band that was Grateful to be Dead,

And Airplanes weren't named Jefferson, and Zeppelins were not Led.

And Beatles lived in gardens then, and Monkees lived in trees,

Madonna was a virgin in the Land That Made Me , Me.

We'd never heard of microwaves, or telephones in cars,

And babies might be bottle-fed, but they weren't grown in jars.

And pumping iron got wrinkles out, and 'gay' meant fancy-free,

And dorms were never coed in the Land That Made Me , Me.

We hadn't seen enough of jets to talk about the lag,

And microchips were what was left at the bottom of the bag.

And Hardware was a box of nails, and bytes came from a flea,

And rocket ships were fiction in the Land That Made Me , Me.

Buicks came with portholes, and side shows came with freaks,

And bathing suits came big enough to cover both your cheeks.

And Coke came just in bottles, and skirts below the knee,

And Castro came to power near the Land That Made Me , Me.

We had no Crest with Fluoride, we had no Hill Street Blues,

We had no patterned pantyhose or Lipton herbal tea

Or prime-time ads for condoms in the Land That Made Me , Me.

There were no golden arches, no Perrier to chill,

And fish were not called Wanda, and cats were not called Bill.

And middle-aged was 35 and old was forty-three,

And ancient were our parents in the Land That Made Me , Me.

But all things have a season, or so we've heard them say,

And now instead of Maybelline we swear by Retin-A.

They send us invitations to join AARP,

We've come a long way, baby, from the Land That Made Me , Me.

So now we face a brave new world in slightly larger jeans,

And wonder why they're using smaller print in magazines.

And we tell our children's children of the way it used to be,

Long ago and far away in the Land That Made Me , Me.

Talking of gay, there was a gay club, right next door to a chinese restaurant - which I think may have been the Pagoda - anyone remember the restaurant or the name of the club? And - which shows how bad my memory is now - where was it?

Also, Chrissie - do you remember the Golden Curry down on Arkwright street and Starline taxis run by two Indian guys - one was called Koli, I think! Can't remember the name of the guy who ran the curry house but he was OK!

And I remember Alex had a house off Gregory Boulevard - one off the roads that went off across from the Goos fair site - bur what road was it?

And while we're at it who ran the Bernie at the end of the Boulevard - was it the White horse? Hart?

It was on Canal Street and I think it was the first gay club in Nottingham, not 100% certain of the name but I think it was Le Chic; the restaurant was/is the Pagoda - it's still there.

Yes it was Le Chic but it later changed its name to something Germanic, I think.

Yes - if I'd pulled really well and wanted to impress I would go to the Pagoda and order a bottle of Lutomer to go with the meal! Plus a glass of water for the girl!! !jumping!

Didn't Paul Atwal run a boutique? He certainly had a way with the girls! Talking of not-quite boutiques what became of the Cecil Gee shop? I used to be friendly with Roy and Rob who worked there.....

The 99 Club - my mother worked behind the bar for a time. Nice club - as I recall they too had

a problem with people climbing in the front from the car park, getting in without paying!

You're right Zab, the gay club was called Le Chic. I worked for a for a firm who furnished it 1976. When I did day release at Peoples 66-70 the chinese restaurant was called The Dragonet. We used to go in for a cheap 3 course lunch. Only cost 4/6d. Probably left overs from the night before.

"Who is boss today ??"

Refers to the manager of the Chinese in the Windmill cafe mentioned in another thread.

The meal was about 7 Bob, but we always paid in a pile of change, one being the treasurer (Boss)

I remember it being the Pagoda, But I also remember the name Dragonet.

Perhaps it was called the latter in 68 when I started people college?

We went there for a 'Business mens lunch'?

Also the chinese at the Windmill Cafe opposite the Odeon cinema NAME?

(In another thread)'

Whilst I think of it, we also went to a small cafe top of Wilford Rd on the left as you went out of town.

The new evening post building is there now, Anyone remember that?

Werent there a bike shop there as well on that corner?

I worked as a lad at the Crawford Biscuits depot in the rail yards on Wilford Rd.After loading we all used to go for breakfast at that cafe...I think it was the Midland Cafe if the old brain cells are correct. The bike shop was Bunnies opposite the old dole office.

Paul.
