hippo girl 1,995
..did the 49 become the el toredor....had a round window ?
OLDACE 196
The 49 was next door to the Toreador(which had the round window). In 1962 the LT as we called it, became the hangout of the Nottingham Aces Rockers. The 49 became the Blade Club, Pat Smith the greengrocer part owned it, along with Tony Oliveira. George Clifton crouped the Chemmy table, he would hand out bombers to keep people awake, they were still legal then. George later founded the Pelham club, which he sold to George Akins, he then started the big Casino on Maid Marion Way, which he eventually sold. His wife Dorothy was jailed for election fraud in the late 60's. IIRC it was Manvers Ward, and she was a Tory.
poohbear 1,360
In the very early sixties when it was the 49...next door was the Toreador, there was a room upstairs which I never went in.A couple of years later the Aces congregated at the Toreador ...long lines of bikes outside that the cops loved to walk up and down with their little books in their hands. When Pat Smith got the licence with Tony Olivero and changed the name to 'The Blade' most of us moved down Shakespeare Street to the 'L shaped room' which stayed open all night..much to the annoyance of a dentist who lived next door. Little guy called Mike ran that with a partner who's name I forget...they opened a place in Skeggy too...Mikes partner,a big strapping rugby player, was only about 22 but died of an asthsma attack...great shock all round...at that age death was a stranger to us...something that happened when you were much older. The cops opposed further coffee bars opening and eventually they fizzled out altogether. So instead of drinking crap coffee and coke all night we drifted into the pubs and the booze culture began...Clever move by the cops there...really intelligent. RGR 218
Yeah, I remember Don Juan cafe. Especially the back room where we used to hang out in the early 64. That's when Mod's wore their hair long. And those black PVC coats and bell bottom pants. My older brother Randy and I used to hang out there. Some names I remember; a guy called H and another one called J (alphabetic soup eh) and a guy that wore a bowler hat called Percy. Boy, that's a long time ago.
