Whilst working in in Detroit I took the opportunity to visit Hitsville USA, the Motown Museum. I have to say it was fanbloodytastic. It tells the story from the early days of Tamla. They had Mich

In a recent survey on Soul Source this Motown record was voted best ever. The vocals of Levi Stubbs make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck.

Might be a time to re-post my live recording of The Four Tops at the Odeon in the early 70s . I am sure that Still Waters was their current single at the time (unfortunately not on this bit ) . Abs

I heard that Irene Ryan who played Granny in the Beverley Hillbillies TV series was the first white woman to sign for Motown. Does anyone know if this true?

I loved anything by The Four Tops and Diana Ross. I used to have the Best of Motown vinyl LPs up to no 5. m just going to put one on as I too have painting to do!!

'Still waters run Deep' is one of my favorite 'Four Tops' songs.Shows Levi Stubs wonderful vocals,in my humble opinion.

'Motown' did have some terrific song-writers,singers,and musicians ( the Funk Brothers).

'Stax',were a close second. It is impossible for me to choose one 'Motown' song,it would have to be my favorite 'top 10', or 20, songs.

OrphanAnnie, I think it was Debbi Dean? A kind of answer to Smokey.." Don't let him shop around". I could be wrong.. Robbie or Dave or Mick will know straight off!!

You are spot on Ian with this one.

Absolutely shocking quality due to where we were sat in relation to the P.A. and the recording device was a Phillips original cassette recorder ! But it is the original Tops and it was in Nottingham !

Two more songs from that early 70s Four Tops , Nottingham concert that may have been at the Theatre Royal (as FiftiesBoy mentioned above) rather than the Odeon ?

These were the last two songs of the show and for 40 years I never knew the title of the closing song , a guite obscure track that never gets any plays , called Turn On the Light Of Your Love . Someone on youtube identified it for me .

This live version is much funkier than the one on the Keeper Of the Castle album . Again apologies for the terrible sound quality but it does give an essence of a live concert :)

DavidW you are soooooo lucky!!! I would die to have seen the real Tops!! Too young, but my first record I bought at 11 was Motown Chartbusters Volume 3. I can't work out why though as it was 10 years old then??!! I can still sing you every track that was on it... when a record is on the radio I automatically start singing the nexxt one from that LP! This old heart of mine... into... a rose for my rose..

I just re-watched a cheesy show called the Nation's Favourite Motown songs, and as well as all the Tops ones I just can't get over David Ruffin's voice on My Girl.... Ain't too proud to beg is one of my fave's too.

:-))
