plantfit 7,593
What year did the powers that be move Queen Victoria's statue from there to the Memorial gardens and why? Rog
Merthyr Imp 729
The statue was moved in 1953.

Brew 5,416
Judging by that picture how it looked then and how it looks now I'd say it could do with a damn good clean.

Waddo 921
Were the lion's installed at the same time as the council house was built or were they a later addition?.
DAVIDW 1,683
Lions installed in 1929 according to this wiki of the sculptor Joseph Else https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Else
Waddo 921
Thanks for that, so basically, at the same time as the council house was built.
DAVIDW 1,683
Looks like it . This is a pic of the opening by Prince of Wales 22/05/1929 . If you zoom in you can just make out the lions .
Waddo 921
When I was waiting for a bus in slab square, a Polish chap asked me what the building was, I told him it was the council house, he said " very nice, I've got my name down for one of those "!!. It's an old one I know, but it fits the thread.

Willow wilson 894
Well proportioned skyline before they built that ugly Market sq house.
Willow wilson 894
What a fabulous vista of Nottingham centre. Burton's, Beastmarket hill and buses. Note the taxis on the left with the yellow painted bonnets. The car's a Riley.

I used to park our Mini on that very spot where the Riley is back in the 60’s
PeverilPeril 3,281
Anyone else old enough to remember the fire ponds in the corners of the square in the 40's?
Waddo 921
And it look's like the taxi stand was in the same place as I remember years later!!
denshaw 2,871
Yes the hi rise would be built by Monks (builders not religion) about 1973/4

NewBasfordlad 3,599
That GPO building was built with a nuclear bunker in the specially reinforced basement. Never outfitted though as by the time came to bring it into service the power of the bombs had increased that much it would have been part of the crater. The GPO shooting club had it has a range instead, shot there a good few times.

jonab 1,644
The pea souper pic reminds me of one I took of the square under similar conditions but on Kodachrome (transparency film). I thought it was beautifully evocative and wanted a print enlargement made. In those days, prints from reversal film had to be processed by Kodak themselves so, the transparency was duly sent to Kodak for the print to be made. A week passed by before I found out that Kodak was refusing to make a print as the quality of the transparency was of "Insufficiently high quality to allow their name to be associated with it." Bladdy cheek!
Commo 1,292
That's a wonderfully evocative image of our Square, but when did QV return from the Embankment? I mean, it must be a recent photo because you can see the tramlines!
Oztalgian 3,289
Are they the original tram lines so pre1936?
