Your bits nearly done meduck (Swimming ) Mind you we ain't got much chance in the athletics either!!

There are just too many swimming events, the competition is too large and the swimming authorities should be much more ruthless in organizing their programme. It rewards too few disparate talents.

We need more variety. Too many of the races are tailored for the same athletic type and repetitious in the talents they showcase. There is way too much doubling up generally, the same competitors swimming, time after time, in 'different' but actually very similar races

If Michael Phelps was a one-man nation, he would have stood at number five in the Beijing 2008 medal table as of Wednesday evening.

His five gold medals have put him above such sporting nations as Australia on four golds, Italy also on four and Great Britain on two.

The 23-year-old's unprecedented achievement at this year's Olympics meant he had beaten 46 of the 50 medal winning nations, as the medal table is ranked primarily according to the number of golds

Marvellous achievements by Phelps, although can't agree with the media title of the Greatest Olympian, bestowed on the strength of overall medal totals.

Top swimmers can compete in many more events than all other athletes, thereby increasing the gold 'potential'.

Even a one-eyed Yank should see that Redgrave's 5 golds over 5 consecutive Olympics, spanning 16 years, is arguably most worthy of the accolade.

Up there also,Rob,would be Nurmi.

It took Finalnd's Paavo Nurmi, probably the greatest middle distance running talent of all time three Olympics to amass his nine gold medals at events ranging from 1500m to 10,000m on the track and cross country. He also took a silver in the steeplechase. Which is about as it should be.

IMMSC There was a shooter (name escapes me) who won 5 golds in consecutive games, but it is not concidered as big an achievement as Sir Steves because it was not an energy sapping (Physical) sport

I know this isn’t going to go down well but I don’t consider anything that don’t require some sort of super human physical effort on the part of the participant to be a sport.

You might as well include stamp collecting alongside of pistol shooting or even slam dunk Darts to be up there with the shot put, ‘now what’s that all about!?

That’s wot I think.

I think they should get rid of all those scanty panty women, and indeed ALL women from the games. Lets go back to the days of all male nude wrestlers and runners etc. That would eliminate all the problems!!! !laughing!

Yes indeed, another real contender for the accolade...in the days of genuine amateurism too.

Carl Lewis likewise...

Compare their efforts with the indifferent attitude shown by this spoilt brat millionaire tennis player Murray this week.

The BOA should, at the very least, recoup from him the - 1st/Business class presumably - return air fare.

I guess the Australian men did not do as well as the women, but the GB team have a much better T&F team so should pull ahead.

G S B Total.

Depends as to total medal count(as per USA) or gold medal count. Either way the Chinese are looking like winners.
