All the buildings up to the Blue Anderson shelter and beyond to the taller building have been demolished to make way for Beestons revamp.

Only pet mart refuses to budge....[blue Anderson shelter]

I lived near Beeston for thirty years and found the place very good for shopping but unfortunately over the last ten years it’s getting a little tired.

Hence it’s taken on the appearance of a bombsite in many areas.

But as soon as the tram comes that will all change….I hope!

And I will tell you another thing there are specialist shops in and on the outskirts of Beeston that one can’t find out here in the wilderness of Sawley.

and another plus the bus service is better

In my child hood ,I always had a great sense of apprehension on approaching Beeston ,either by bus or car , because it meant we were visiting relatives (All my fathers surviving family still lives in the area.) and it was always a treat for me. It usually involved a walk to Highfields , culminating in a visit to the boating lake , great day out

Is the boating lake still opperating anybody???

I remember that lake well. 4 of us took out two boats. I was in a boat with Alan Carter (who lived in near Beeston Station, went to Bramcote Tech and later Plesseys) who insisted on trying to rock our boat to it's limits. I tried to counter his rocking and of course the inevitable happened and we went in. We pulled the boat to the side and did a runner, soaked to the skin. His suffering was greater though as he lost his glasses for good in the lake.

Happy days! Are you out there Alan? Do you remember?

That's a memory from my childhood, too. My father was born in Beeston and when I was a child, my paternal grandparents lived in Humber Road. I remember driving past the Lads' Club in the car with my dad when we went to visit them.
