Looking For Old Buddies

Recommended Posts

 Hey, I'm new here, never done this before (yes, I'm a rookie). I'm from California and used to spend my summers in Nottingham during the late 80's and early 90's. I'm coming to Nottingham in early April and want to see some of my local friends. I'm looking for a Richard W. that used to frequent The Aviary back then. For his privacy, I won't mention his full last name, but he was a painter, and his parents lived in Snenton. I'm also looking for "Steve" who drove one of those black and white cabs that wait in the town hall area. Don't know anything else about either of them except that they are both in their mid-thirties now (God, that makes me that old too!) I will be staying in Nottingham April 8th, if anyone thinks they might know either of these guys, or if you just have any ideas what a person might do on a Friday night in Nottingham, let me know!

Thanks for the welcome! I live near Sacramento, but I was born and raised mostly in the Palm Springs area. My Mom (or Mum as you would say) was born in Ilkeston and lived in Nottingham until she moved to the US in 1960. She used to frequent the Astoria Ballroom for all you older members. She was quite the "Bobbie Dazzler" in her day. It's that whole "Nottingham Girls" thing. ;) Anyway my Grandfather lives in Ripley and we are coming to see him in April, but I insisted we take an overnight trip to Nottingham, my favorite place in England. I've been all over England, but my fondest memories are in Nottingham. We rented a flat just down the road from the castle, and I would take walks into town and just sit in the square and "people watch". I became friends with Steve (one of the people I am looking for). He was a taxi driver while he went to University, probably not anymore. Just a job to pay for school. He used to take me horseback riding in Sherwood Forest. A wink and a flash of the old pearly whites got me a free ride in his taxi! (Yes, that's all I ever gave up!) I also used to go dancing at the Ritzy, but I mainly hung out at The Aviary (by Trent bridge). That's where I knew Richard from. He and I dated unlike Steve. Extremely long distance relationships never work :( Anyway, I've been feeling quite "Nottstalgic" and I'm so excited about being able to go back, if even just for a day! :D

OK, remember I'm a rookie, what does GaG mean? The last time I was there was in summer of '93. Twas a good year (pre-babies!) That was 3 children ago, I'm not quite as trim as I was then, but I'm working on it! ;)

Hi, Cali Gal - Super Nottstalgian!

I'm at this very moment busy looking to find the names of those two licenced (no doubt about it) taxi drivers you met in Nottingham just fifteen years ago!

Meanwhile, I wonder if you could dig out the name of that black bloke's mate who sometimes used to stand in on spring bank holidays for the under assistant ticket clipper on platform seven b between 12 and One at Chattanooga West Main. Thanks!

Twat.

And by the way, Richard W went on to host the greatest quiz show on English television. Unfortunately, he dropped dead of jacketosis earlier this year and the show was given - obviously - to his next of kindred spirit. An unemployed male model (snogger).

Richard is survived by his immediate family: two grasping talentfree old munters.

Hope this all was of help to you. Don't ya be a stranger, now!

A jolly fine time was had by all as we devoured one by one the iced buns followed closely by the cupcakes, cheese sandwiches, vol au vents, pork pie, anchovy paté, and the Neopolitan ice cream.. feeling a little queezy I retired to the veranda where Penelope was whistfully staring at the stars "hello" I said in broad upperclass South Kensington accent, "hello" she replied as I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me "but I don't know you!" she said . it was then I decided that customising my Claude Butler 5 speed cycle by the addition of a pair of multicoloured rubber handlebar grips would be a rather good idea, so making my departure I bid her adieu, eagerly setting about my quest...

the grips were a pig! .. the outside diameter of which being smaller than the diameter of the bar on which they were intended, eventually though, and after a long protracted struggle involving copious amounts of vaseline and brute force, I did get the blighters to fit, it was then I decided to go for a ride.

the country air filled my lungs and my buttocks moved rythmically in harmonious synchronisation with my thighs, my heart pounding as I negotiated bend after bend of asphalt heaven.. then it happened! .. I felt movement in the lefthand grip, and within seconds I had lost control.. the whole cycle ending up in the ditch, the wheels buckled and the framework bent, and if this wasn't bad enough, there was a tear in my balaclava, and the donkey jacket was ripped to shreds!

Friends I refuse to beleive it, it's not me again, "is it"? It must be, i don't see any options or explanations to this conundrum. I still refuse to beleive that it's me who don't understand what is going on on this site. Have i lost it, have i been away too long, have they moved the goal posts, have certain members been given a different script to read from or has the world actually gone mad and i'm the only sane one left. I just don't know. Anyway sod it i'm of down to the game at the Stadium, see ya............... yahoo

And the scumbag you elected to the Shitehouse doesn't con me by sticking on his sertherrn draaawl whenever he's interviewed over his complicity in the murder of New Orleans, so don't expect its good people to get fogged by the 'little stunned rabbit' either.

If it was Republican Cali, or Royal Connecticut, the entire REAL military would've been there en masse faster than the stink off the bodies, and not the weekend wonders (National Guard, to the ley).

Bet them pearly white passports are impervious to all of this though, eh, Gringita!

I take offense to what you have said, but I, unlike you will not force my political opinion on others.

I have a friend who works for the CHP (California Highway Patrol) who was sent their almost immediately. Due to the inaccessability of the city, hundreds of rescue workers were forced to sit and wait outside of the city for the first couple of days at the location he was at.

Keep in mind this was a NATURAL disaster, not controllable by the government. I avoid politics, so please keep any political comments in the Politics forum where I don't venture.

And besides, what idiot thought to build a city below sea level, between a massive lake and one of the largest rivers, and in a tornado and hurricane prone area.

I'm sorry all, usually as you know, I am quite cheerful, but the comments made struck a nerve.

Nice to see you back Elaine.

Looked at splitting this to Politics but, it was a bit difficult.

Dont take offence we have our share of idiot politicians here too.

BTW, Do you have sheds in California. I cant remember seeing any?

A "shed" here is also a ropey old automobile, perhaps he services Chevy's

Brother Pele's in the back, sweet Zina's in the front

Cruisin' down the freeway in the hot, hot sun

Suddenly red-blue lights flash us from behind

Loud voice booming, "Please step out onto the line"

Pele preaches words of comfort, Zina just hides her eyes

Policeman taps his shades, "Is that a Chevy '69?"

"How bizarre"

Look within oneself for the answer cos the truth is out there!

and don't forget, it riles them to believe the whim you perceive!

Mick, how come when I type the word "Sorry", that silly smiley shows up instead of the word?

sorry - didn't mean to offend you. I just hope you're one of those Americans who visit places and not one of those who 'do' places. I've met and lived with hundreds of those and it aint easy to bite your lip sometimes. Especially when you've witnessed so much unfairness in your life - you tend to tell it like it is.

Forget what I said and make sure you have a great time in Nottm when you visit next. I recommend the Laguna restaurant on Mount St

Some words invoke a smillie, just the weay the system works.

I change the word slightly if that happens. or use a diffirent word.

The problem with natural disasters is they happen at the most innapropriate time and place. No matter how well prepared we think we are, they will always get the upper hand on us.

New Orleans was only part of the area affected, something like twice the size of the UK. The coast line from the Pan Handle of Florida to west of New Orleans was hit bad. Mississippi took the brunt. Katrina also scored big as far north as Kentucky, so politics had nothing to do with the so called "slow responce".

Major infrastructure was down for over thousands of square miles, roads were damaged, bridges down, electricity was and still is out to millions, telephones out and still are, plus the marvel of the 21st century, cell phones out. Even today, cell phone coverage is almost nil in most of the affected areas.

Ham radio has helped and is still being used by thousands of hams to aid in communications of welfare etc.

New Orleans was built by the French, at that time AT SEA LEVEL, now due to the type of soil, below sea level. All is not lost!!! Sacramento, that is "Old Sacramento" was the same, it was built up one full story, so the streets are 10 feet higher than when the city was founded. Although it's a tourist area these days, most don't realize when they are walking it's streets that they are actually walking at the second story level!! Maybe Louisianan's should look to Californians for the answer to save that wonderful city.

Are any of us prepared???? NEVER! not in our private lives nor the way we live.

I live west of the Mississippi River, west of one of the biggest and most active fault lines in the USA, The New Madrid fault! Last time "she" moved was in the 1800's! What would happen today??? Well, St.Louis and Memphis would suffer catastrophic damage! Not to mention many other major towns and cities in the Mississppi river valley. God only knows how many tens of thousands would die in that one!

 Hello Ayup, thanks for that about Sacramento, I was totally unaware of that, and I've been in Old Sac several times. Now that you mention it, it did seem a little strange that the Sacramento River (which runs right along side Old Sac) sits so low to the streets and buildings. There's literally a cliff with stairways leading down to the docks, my guess is about a 50 ft. difference in elevation. I've been in this area for 5 years now, looks like I need to get out more and learn this stuff!! B)
