Nottingham pubs you really miss

CT if it's like here no one will care. They'll go back to their old habits, not wear masks and will not remember social distancing. Last nights news said that areas around Milan bars have to close at 7 pm to stop people sitting around anywhere, not social distancing and congregating in large groups. Not a very good phase 2 start for us.

I just miss all "Pubs" the music - sing-songs- good night out with friends - dancing on tables- people being drunk (just happy drunk) at least if you joined in the singing and if you did not have a si

I must admit that even though I'm from Mong Eaton, Nottingham was always my town for drinking. I worked at Butlins Minehead from 1979 to 1983 and my best mate Jake's from Portsmouth. In about 1981 a g

Only just discovered this wonderful site. At the end of the 70s I lived in bed sit land better known as Mapperley Park, on Magdala Road and used The New Inn virtually every night of the week. A great

I'm not sure how I'd react myself. I think I'd be ok if it was me and one other person, but I can't decide about being with a group of people.

For example, Nottstalgia meet-ups and that kind of close-but-not-too-close contact with several others. I'm not sure if I'd be ok with that kind of situation or if I'd be a bit twitchy.

I’m not at all concerned about going out and ‘mixing’, I’ve still been going food shopping every week, and I must admit we’ve not been particularly bothered about missing our regular twice weekly visit to the local to meet friends.  What we HAVE really missed is eating out in restaurants and seeing our family who all live 100 miles away ...... we saw one son in February but not seen the other one since the weekend before Christmas.

I would measure this carefully. If the pub did not have social distancing I would just walk out. On the day before the lockdown I was in the Lady Chatterley and they did a decent job of social distancing certainly close to what they are doing in supermarkets, so I would trust Wetherspoons to keep that standard. Wise move to state that they have firm plans in place. It is much more reassuring than a pub that is just going to throw its doors open.  I have some doubts that other pubs will do the same. Some of my favourite pubs are tiny, like Dixies at Bagthorpe, so much as I love the place, and however well it is run, it may not actually be physically possible to do much social distancing unless there are only about 10 people in the pub. I can imagine the Trip would have similar issues.

On nights I finish about 10am so I am sitting on the doorstep of my local pub like a soaked puppy, waiting for them to open. That would be a easily manageable environment as there are very few in there. Later on in the day, I would go nowhere near it. They have an active pool league and I cannot see that starting.

There is a huge elephant in the pub, and that is the probability of a second wave. Despite Boris being populist in trying to open shops, the national  R rate is published every day and its hovering just below danger levels. Remember please that is an average, and regional rates may be just about ready to escalate. The rate drop in London brings the average down, and we now know Boris doesnt care at all about anything outside the M25.

The Idea of me socialising is academic, now. My partners father died around midday. Aside from my hourly ride first thing, I've been confined to our house and her mothers garden. The 4th June would have been their Diamond anniversary, so quite sad. I've laid off rebuilding my youngests bike, and will go up to her house tomorrow to strip down and varnish the old bench under the canary bird that the pair of them sat and, often as not, bickered incessantly!

Will also be able to keep an eye on her.

My eldest wants to get a brass plaque to put on it - she doesn't see why it should be only public places that have them.

So, keep taking great care - whatever the experts advise - they've been wrong before, and will be again.

The only pub I miss is the " Blenheim ", only because I worked there until leaving Nottingham. Nothing special about it but a great clientele. Don't think it's there now. Que sera sera.

That is sad, Phil, that the passing is so close to their Diamond anniversary.  My father passed on 3 years prior to my parents' 60th but they, likewise, loved to sit and bicker!

You need to keep a careful eye on your partner's mother as she will feel the loss intensely, as couples do who have been together for so many decades.

I think the plaque is an excellent idea!

Know the Liberal Cub well had my wedding reception in the room up stairs  its at the start of St Ann's well road give or take 40/50 yards.

I miss all the "PUBS" where you could have a good sing song with the old joanner playing. Remember The Brick and Tile at Underwood changed from a pub to "MA HUBBARDS" now no longer ma hubbards site now OAP bungalows. have been built on the land.

A very dear friend of mine was the manager/licensee (or whatever club managers are called) at the Liberal Club in the 1980's: John Moore.  Sadly no longer with us, a great, generous guy with a wry smile, always had a tale to tell and an extraordinarily dry sense of humour; could have you doubled up and on the floor at a close relative's funeral!  Always wore buttoned up camel coat with a black velvet collar - held his cigarette in the air like an Italian God bless him.  One of what you might call 'Nottingham characters' of which there are so few remaining these days.

When pubs eventually reopen it'll be interesting to see how busy - or not - they will be.

How comfortable will people be about going back into a relatively confined, closed space surrounded by strangers ?

And how extraordinarily (even more extraordinarily) expensive drinking in pubs has become.  Especially after all these months of supping at home.

The price never fails to amaze me for what is at the end of the day flavoured water, £34 per gallon. Beer per pint will soon equal the price of petrol per gallon.

The licensed trade has lost a fortune during the pandemic so they will naturally try to recoup it.  That's capitalism for yer.

P.S.  Not a pub I really miss exactly.. but one I remember.. vaguely.. which is pretty much how I remember everything these days...

I used to work at 'Cheshire's of Nottingham'..a carpet warehouse at the Valley road end of Nottingham Road..and we used to sometimes nip up to a pub called the Rose and Crown.. further up towards town.. on the right.  All I can find now... is a pub/bar called the Willow Tree..at the end of Zulu Rd.  I suppose it could be the same place..  Anyone?

I once returned a bad pint to the bar once asked the landlord if he'd paid 30 odd quid for a gallon petrol and his car wouldn't start would he kick off at the garage attendant!  He got my drift..and changed my draught ....boom boom!!

I know the chap who owns the Blue Monkey brewery but I don't drink his beers even though some are prize-winning. I can't bring  myself to pay £4 a pint for beer that's brewed from tap water in stainless steel tanks in a 'chemical factory' in Giltbrook! Perhaps all breweries are like that now. I like to think that craft beers are made in wooden vats from springwater and stirred by burly brewers in leather aprons! It was like that when I went round Bateman's 20 years ago and certainly at Shipstones in the 60's. They add chemicals to 'Burtonise' the tap water.
