I just miss all "Pubs" the music - sing-songs- good night out with friends - dancing on tables- people being drunk (just happy drunk) at least if you joined in the singing and if you did not have a si

I must admit that even though I'm from Mong Eaton, Nottingham was always my town for drinking. I worked at Butlins Minehead from 1979 to 1983 and my best mate Jake's from Portsmouth. In about 1981 a g

Only just discovered this wonderful site. At the end of the 70s I lived in bed sit land better known as Mapperley Park, on Magdala Road and used The New Inn virtually every night of the week. A great

Does anybody remember the Horse and Groom that used to be in a courtyard at the corner of Wheeler gate and St.Peters Gate ?

I worked there for a while in 1966.

Good pub but lousy ale.

I remember the Horse and Groom on Wheeler Gate as I used to go there a bit in the late 1970s. My main memories of it include going there on a pub crawl for my 21st and having a pint glass of mixed spirits thrust into my hand to drink by the assembled throng. I managed to pass that one on and live to tell the tale though. My other main memory is of entering the pub by going up an alleyway to a large rear bar.

1970s/80s?

re anagrams, someone I knew had a habit of arranging the "beer clothes" on the bar so as to cover certain letters in SHIPSTONES to annoy the landlady at The Fox and Crown Old Basford!

Looks like you got Filtered Compo :)

H&G should have done well in theory as it was in the 'pub walk' but closed

down many years ago.

Re the beer towel folding?

As mentioned earlier in the thread, I quite miss this place. I know it's still there in a different incarnation but it's horrible now. Happy days of popping over to the 'Tav' and 'Mort's' from Trent Poly.

  • 2 weeks later...

The Exchange had that reputation (I won't go into details but there was a big kick off in there Christmas 79 !!)

It certainly wasn't gay in 1971 when I was propositioned by a lady of the night. - she had a great chest but I was waiting for my wife at the time :o(

Is the Hand & Heart still on Derby road? Had a room cut into the sandstone at the back.

The Hand and Heart goes from strength to strength these days. It did close for a little while at one time.

The cave at the back is now mainly a restaurant. They also have a pub quiz in there once a week - 'The Quiz in the Cave' - sounds a good idea for a Nottstalgia meet!

All being well I'm over from 3rd June (Kev and Martines wedding) till Thursday 7th, unfortunately it's SWMBOs birthday on the Monday and she's a bit reluctant to be going to a 'pub quiz' on her birthday, leave it with me , I'll talk her round !!

After church on summer Sundays in the late 50s/early 60s, about once per month, my father used to take us to the White Hart on Mansfield Road, Redhill. He would sit us outside in the old stable area with a glass of pop whilst he had a pint of Guinness in the bar. It was always something to look forward to. We used to alternate, one Sunday we would walk up to Ravenswood road and visit my dreaded maternal grandma and the next we would have my maternal grandma for tea.

Despite this being over 50 years ago, I still miss the old White Hart.

You didn't mean the Waggon & Horses at Redhill with the stable did you Compo? There used to be a stable there where kids would play.

I'm not quite old enough to remember the original White Hart - which was (marginally) in Daybrook though used to use its successor (which is now a huge pile of rubble).

No Stu, I mean the White Hart at the bottom of Oxclose lane. There was a farm behind the pub that might have originally been linked when it was a coaching inn many moons ago. There was an archway through to the yard with a side entrance door. I shall have to take a look at Picture the Past and see if I can spot it.

I used to have the occasional drink in the "Waggon" but my father used to go to the "Ram Inn" every Thursday evening with his pals and play cribbage over a few pints. He always brought crisps back for we kids.

Below: See the phone box at the bottom of Oxclose Lane? I spent many an hour phoning a girlfriend from that box. It was in there that she told me over the phone that I was dumped.

I can't believe that Picture the Past has no pictures of the Nell Gwynne pub on Oxlcose Lane! It had such a distinctive illuminated sign. One of my mother's friends complained to the council about the image on the sign being pornographic!

I can only just remember the older pub. The main thing I remember is that it was right up close to the road, as pictured. On the second pic you can see the newly constructed replacement White Hart in the land behind the original pub. We have the White Hart featured in a thread somewhere on here.

Do you remember the gated road that went straight up to Bestwood Lodge just up the road? The old gatepost is still there. Apparently the large mock tudor style house next to it was a toll house I'm told.
