LizzieM 9,507
I can well understand your sadness regarding the Grey Goose Carni, especially as you spent so many happy times there and so did your younger brother by the sounds of it. I never went in there but passed by the place every day for 5 years on my way to school. Unfortunately this is a sign of the times, pubs being replaced by care homes, on a good plot of land in the heart of a community.

Rob.L 1,090
As Lizzie says, pubs are making way for care homes, like the one my father in law was in for a while which was on the site of the Maid Marian on Coppice Road in Arnold. They're far more profitable than pubs. Reason he's not there now is he refused to pay when they hiked his fees up to £2,500 a month!
Michael Booth 7,364
dgbrit (#224). I can remember going a few times to the Log Cabin at Watnall in the 60's. There used to be live music on and I think one of the bands I saw was the Reg Guest Trio.
Ashley 288
Think was always a disco when we went, was many moons ago, do remember crashing my bike just down the road from there on the way home one night though! (previously related somewhere on here)

Ashley 288
There's a few bars (can't really call them pubs?) I wouldn't miss around the market square, esp if armed with a cruise missile! Was there last night at around 7pm, already there was a police car, riot and dog vans plus an ambulance on standby, these did not seem to deter the swarms of men, by no means all teenagers lurching from one bar to another with their war cries, nor did it put off 4 others who despite being hardly unable to stand were taking part in 2 separate supporting boxing bouts before the later main event, a mass brawl about 11.20 on Friar Lane. Luckily by then I was on my bus (42 seated and about another 50 standing) pulling round onto Angel Row past the mobile hospital ward set up and the swelled ranks of SPG officers chatting to and holding up various females. To me the whole scene seemed to be one of totally out of control? I guess the one comforting thought is this will come to an end? once the next generation have been educated not to replace the present combatants who will surely not last that long dying young from either alcoholic poisoning, liver failure or pneumonia brought on by scanty dressing outdoors in december
catfan 14,793
Re the Grey Goose & the Belle Vue on Woodborough Rd, now both demolished & now care homes. Well, I delivered the bricks for the new buildings, so there. !
caeperthi 5
So many pubs I miss - spent far too much time in them during the 70s and 80s. The Imperial (Cisco night) anyone remember Les the Landlord - quite a character! I went there to celebrate my 18th and he barred me for a week as I had been going there for two years.... Flying Horse - first pub I ever went in, Sal, Trip, Yates, Frodos Lord Nelson, to name but a few... but one place I really had a soft spot for was Colwick Hall used to cycle there during the week as they were so pleased to have customers they didnt check ages. Karlton 582
I remember Trumans near slab square I seem to recall someone saying it had the longest bar in Nottingham, true or false?
Karlton 582
I recall The Grovener in Arnold it was said you needed the lonsdale belt to walk in there, a bit of a rough house.
FLY2 10,108
Jallands on Hockley, now called Goose Gate I think. They used to be the only place that sold draught Guinness in the city. Beautiful.
.... 23
I recall The Grovener in Arnold it was said you needed the lonsdale belt to walk in there, a bit of a rough house. The Grove at Daybrook Square has been long closed and lies empty. It was indeed a bit 'tasty' in there at times. Gedling Borough Council have brought it and will be building housing on there. benjamin1945 16,158
The 'Grove' was just one of those pubs you felt like 'chinning' somebody as soon as you walked in,and i was never like that, honest,
Michael Booth 7,364
The Grove was a bit of a dive in the 60's.

NewBasfordlad 3,599
I had a great maternal uncle who worked has a 'pot-man' in the Grove way back when. He stood trial for murder at Nottingham assizes after he chinned someone and they hit their head on a fire fender as they fell. Not guilty I am glad to say.
benjamin1945 16,158
Many pubs that have gone had reputation for trouble, nice to see the back of em, shame some of the nicer places are gone as well though.
caeperthi 5
I remember Trumans near slab square I seem to recall someone saying it had the longest bar in Nottingham, true or false? My grandad was the Landlord there and yes it did have - the vaults bar was so rough that the only women who went there were ladies of the night and my mum as chief barmaid wasnt allowed to work behind the bar in the vaults. Cliff Ton 10,464
Truman's on Beastmarket Hill. Burtons are still on the corner of Friar Lane, but the rest has gone.
FLY2 10,108
Not necessarily a pub I miss, but noticed today, a Co-op store is being erected on the site of the Jag in Stapleford. Notice I said erected, not built. Is nothing built properly these days? It all comes as a kit on a couple of low loaders.
Michael Booth 7,364
I agree, basfordred. New buildings today are 4 walls, a roof and windows. No character or style whatsoever. You could make them with LEGO and nobody would notice.
