DJ360 6,712
I hate Halloween. I suppose if you are religious and want to remember your ancestors, your dead, your saints and martyrs etc., then that is your choice. But Halloween as it is now in it's American influenced style of just dressing up and pretending to be scared/scary whilst annoying the neighbours, is just a commercialised meaningless waste of time. Must admit that both my Grandkids enjoy dressing up and so on.. but with my own I never really encouraged it. Mind.. I'm a miserable so and so... Was walking home from the shops at dusk last night when I saw a chap struggling to get what I thought was a tall cupboard or a fridge freezer or summat round the side of his house. When I got closer I saw that it was in fact what looked very much like a real, full sized coffin. Not some jokey mock up in black, but a real varnished wooden coffin with brass handles etc. Wasn't sure about that at all.. But I've just wandered round for a look and two blokes there now. They've erected a a big green tent on the drive with 'Enter if you dare' on a sign. Maybe the coffin is inside? I suppose they might be planning an attraction to raise money for charity? I still hate Halloween though.. Col 1

Gem 1,430
Hubby just finished hanging a green headed goul from the attic window, he goes on a long pole and as he moves his head lights up and he cackles. He is out till 7.30 because by then all the little ghosts have gone home. My son brought it home 7 years ago said to his dad you can hang the witch out of the window his reply - no your mum wouldn't like it. Didn't take him long to recover. Happy Halloween. 2
carni 10,094
My house is all decorated and ready for all the little wide eyed ghosts and their mummies to pass by. They start arriving just before 5pm and for the next hour and a half, we have such a laugh with the neighbours and children. We started to do the Halloween thingy when our Granddaughter was at infant school, she loved it. She is fast approaching 17yrs now and we can't bring ourselves to stop doing it. It gives our neighbours and ourselves a giggle at the fantastic costumes and makeup warn by the children. I would love to think that all of the children that join us every Halloween, will remember us when they are grown up and reminiscing with each other about their childhood. Something like this will thrill me and I might even come back to haunt them. Ooooer. 3

katyjay 5,085
Some of the churches I know, do Trunk or Treat, everyone parks their cars in a car park, opens up the trunk and gives out sweeties to the little kids as they go round. Much safer than knocking on stranger's doors!

Gem 1,430
My granddaughter has had her first Halloween in her own house, so decided to welcome local children. Two small boys knocked on her door with mum so they went in and the smallest said " I thought witches had a black cat". Grandaughter has a black great dane she just looked at his mother and laughed never been called a witch before.
denshaw 2,869
That's Halloween over then, they are putting the Christmas tree up today in the market square, not long now then for Christmas.

Disgraceful. But that's NCC for you. I've said it before. I can't start to think about Christmas until the embers on the Nov 5th bonfire have died. As for Halloween, it's just another excuse to get people to spend money like grandparents day. Bleddy American marketeers. Just so you don't think I'm a total miserable git I should add we do give sweets to trick and treaters and we do have carved pumpkins on display but I can't say it floats my boat. I went in a card shop in the US a few years back and saw a Happy Circumcision Day card. How long before they turn up here? I like this one. https://www.someecards.com/usercards/viewcard/5808a0b50db6879def7f1196cbbdf62f24/
loppylugs 8,424
They shouldn't put that tree up yet. The local Chavs might pinch it for their bonfire.

LizzieM 9,497
Oh well, the City Council desecrated the Old Market Square as we knew it (and loved) to build that big empty characterless space to hold events. Suppose Bonfire Night would fit that description.

Suppose Bonfire Night would fit that description. When living in Nottingham i worked in Griffin and Spalding mainly saturdays and odd days when not at university. Lunch times in the summer we sat in the square and watched the world go by, if you sat in the right place you ended up with a nice tan, now it has no appeal at all. The only time it comes alive is summer when it's filled with children.
Jill Sparrow 10,267
Tarquin asked if we're going for a ride on the besom when it gets dark. Then the other two wanted to come as well. Three, plus this old hag, would be overcrowding, so I think we'll stay in!
radfordred 6,284
From 5pm to 8pm tonight, all lights & telly off, take car off the drive & park it up the road, move to backroom, doing the fat kids a favor 4

loppylugs 8,424
Didn't have any here either. We kept the lights out and laid low. The dogs barked quite a lot though. I think they just sense that something is not normal and it makes them edgy.
MargieH 7,594
I don't celebrate Halloween but I appreciate that young children take a lot of care carving out pumpkins. For this reason, I feel sad that some youths went round the village last night smashing any at were still outside houses, or kicking them down the road. Some of the little children were crying when they saw what had happened to their pumpkins.

loppylugs 8,424
All I can say, Rog is limited as religion, like politics is not much open to discussion and I've no desire to enter into a religious argument with anybody. I'll just try to state facts. 1, Time was when most religious groups were opposed to witchcraft and the Harry Potter series is based on the premise that it is real. 2. Their views were based on Biblical texts. They are there but I won't start quoting them for aforementioned reasons. 3. Some started witch hunting and I'm sure a few innocent old ladies probably got burned at the stake as a result. Needless to say it got the church a bad reputation (Fanaticism always leads to trouble) 4. Claiming to put spells and hexes on enemies is not nice behaviour. I could go on but that is probably enough. Surfice it to say many ike me are opposed to it. The antichrist is really another subject entirely. Interesting topic though if you are into Bible prophecy as I am.
