Don't worry, it's not an obituary.

I was looking for some Hucknall pictures to send to Tomlinson and came across my pictures that I took at 'Our Enry's' wedding in 1967, as Henry had been mentioned recently, I thought that some of you football officianado's would like to see them as they feature members of Forest's famous 66-67 team in informal pose.

Henry started off with my brother at Russell School in Wollaton then transferred to Firbeck when it opened in the early 50's. Mr Galloway, our only male teacher and football mad, recognised his potential and he was captain of the famous Firbeck team that won the Nottingham Junior School Cup in the late 50's, a great achievment for such a small school without it's own football pitch. Here's my only picture of Mr Galloway:-

I can't recall which school Henry went on to, William Sharp?

Anyway, Henry and his brother were everyones pals, but Henry was commited to football, we didn't see him around that much, and was signed as a junior to Forest.

Mr Galloway was very proud of him and every Tuesday when we went swimming to Radford Baths, Henry would be waiting outside his gate with his boots and we'd give him a lift into town, as an apprentice, I think he got naff all money and his family weren't very well off, in fact I think his father may have died, perhaps Bip could answer that one as he lived only two doors away.

Anyway, Henry got famous as a vital member of the great 66-67 Forest team and was due to be married during the 1967 close season.

Now his mum and my mum were as thick as thieves, she asked Henry if I would be allowed to go to the wedding and I was invited to attend, quite frankly, it was an opportunity for me to meet the players, I was a bit overcome, I was only 16 at the time.

Funny isn't it, imagine these days, a great player, part of the set up of arguably the second best team in the country, it would have been all an exclusive £1 million deal with 'Hello Magazine'. Not then, he got married in Arnold church, yes, there were a lot of fans outside and a police presence, but I arrived on my bike, told them who I was and got waved through, I parked my bike on a grave stone and enjoyed the experience.

Clearly the elastic band in my camera was not functioning well that day, but here's a few of the pics:-

Can you identify the players in the photo's, most of them I can, I know that Peter Hindley was the best man but there are some faces in the pics that I'm not sure of, Ian Storey Moore on the end of the line don't you think. Incidentally, Joe Baker was still recovering from his broken leg from the Everton quarter final, but I recall the lovely Bobby Mackinlay telling me that Joe did'nt really socialise with the rest of them, he gave me one of his Players Navy Cut plain fags as well, bad lad, lovely blokes, everyone of them, I had a great time talking to them, imagine that sort of thing happening now.

Could well be, I'd quite forgotten that episode.

Shades of Marcus Trescothick/Steffan Jones...forty years on... Sometimes think of the outstanding, but uncapped, Grummitt when I see today's very average 'keepers vying for the England shirt.

Cheers

Poor Peter Grummit had to put up with Banksy, Ron and Peter Springett, and don't lets forget the other unsung hero and one of my favourites, Peter 'The Cat' Bonetti. What would we give for any of those to be available for England nowadays.

I used to be a member of the Nottingham Trolleybus group and their secretary used to live next door but one to Peter Grummit, as a consequence, we knew what was happening.

I was just on the phone to a pal in Lancs and we were discussing what players earned in those days. Lets not forget that it wasn't so many years before that the £20 minimum wage had been abolished for footballers and George Easthams various wage disputes with Newcastle, Arsenal et al had only just been decided, favourably, in the High Court.

What was the average wage in '67, £15-£20, what did footballers earn, £100 a week. Forest used to charge 5/- per adult for the Main Stand and Trent End, 4/- for the rest of the ground. Think about it, probably with their high gates in 66-67, 47500 max, we are talking about takings of possibly £10000 per match, so how much filtered down to the players, probably grateful in those days for whatever they could get.

Poor old Henry, he would have been on £60000 at least these days and made a £1m bonus out of his wedding, he probably received a pittance from the Nottingham Evening Post for his wedding pictures and possibly a bit of a bonus from the club as a wedding gift.

He ended up with arthritic hips and a job as postmaster at Normanton in Derby, perhaps he was one of the lucky ones.

We have a damaged Spurs player living up the road, no names mentioned, he has an unbelievable house and is apparently on £60000 a week for doing nowt and isn't expected to play again, sad isn't it, considering that he was an average, not well known player.

Poor old Henry, born into the wrong time, perhaps these over rich current gits should help the talented old boys out, but, Henry Newton? who was he then, I remember Keith the erstwhile England left back.

Not long after his playing days, recall seeing Henry struggling up Bridlesmith Gate on a pair of crutches.

Heard that Everton had administered too much cortizone, over too limited a period...could have wept for him.

Bob McKinlay said they were given £10 per man bonus for winning the '59 FA Cup!

Arguably, the best Scottish footballer never to be capped...back in the days of the "Anglo Quota"

Certainly puts the current "yer know","as I just said","obviously","at the end of the day" £60K a week brigade in to perspective. Rooney set to be next Man U captain...imagine the pre and post match press conferences!

Also remember Keith Newton of Blackburn and England. Rode back in a Manchester train with him following a 1-0 Forest defeat at Ewood, in which he had played. Told me that Calvin Palmer (there was an enigma!) had sworn and cursed his way through the whole 90 minutes, so they were pleased that the only goal had deflected in off him!

IIRC, Keith passed away at a surprisingly young age...under 40?

Keith Newton died at the age of 58 of lung cancer, what was Bob Mackinlays cause of death, the same sort of related issues.

Not much response to this thread apart fom you and I Rob, I'm surprised, wasn't Henry a local hero.

Henry Newton as well as being a very underrated and tenacious footballer was an absolute gentleman. His wife had lived on the road in Redhill where I now live and was good friends with my elder sister at that time.

As a youngster I was hit by a car suffering two broken legs and months laid up at home. Henry got to hear about this and visited me at home and brought a Christmas tree for our family with him. He took away my autograph book and had it signed by the complete 1966/7 Forest team along with Manager Johnny Carey and Trainer Tommy Cavanagh. I still treasure those autographs and memories of Henry's kindness.

One of the very best, as a man and a footballer.

Mike Kear, Bob Chapman, the late Bill Brindley, any more.

Perhaps the presence of Colin Addison was the reason for Peter Grummits none appearance.

!englandflag! Could that be Chris Crowe at the right hand end????????

There was a Newton in my class at school (Claremont 1957-1962) played for Nottingham boys and at sometime I think York City? sure his name was Henry? as I was virtually expelled (asked to leave) never got to end of my schooling and lost touch with classmates! lol

Wouldn't have thought so...wasn't Chris Crowe more light haired?

Definitely Ian Moore in the top picture and possibly Bill Brindley? in the lower.

Apparently, Chris became a taxi driver in Bristol and passed away some years ago.

Cheers

Re then and now wages, have mentioned elsewhere how managers totally cock it up at one club, get sacked and within weeks (sometimes less) someone else takes them on, not just once either! Am waiting to see where Paul Hart goes next! and will follow Darren Ferguson's rise or fall!

Not sure if anyone interested but Henry’s brother Ron married my Mums youngest sister Irene, and as young families my Mum, Dad and myself and my sister spent a lot of time with Ron,Irene and their two children. I was aware of Henry being a footballer but I don’t think I ever met him .   It certainly impressed my Derby County Supporter Boyfriend when I told him that my uncles brother was Henry Newton. We married after a few years and have now been together 32 years!

It's all a matter of relativity D/B, to a few of us here you are nobbut a lad, enjoy being a youngster because before you know it  you'll be as "mature" as we are now!

PS: Henry was one of my heroes!!

I like it when a 53 year old is considered a youngster

I've said it before - you're as old as other people think you are.
