Outlaw99 2
Another old box emptied during the day revealed more about old Arnold and, together with a couple of photos in a library book, gives me another poser for you to ask your grandparents (or people that knew them) about. In a little under four years it will be the centenary of the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Arnold/Daybrook and it seems a set of medals/medallions were presented to the members of the council to commemorate the visit. Two bronze, the larger for the men and a much smaller one for their wives, there was an even larger one of a light alloy that might have been more widely distributed, this one had the date of the visit on the obverse and a different coloured ribbon. Can anyone throw more light on this.
.... 23
I can't throw any more light on that but what I can say is that I've seen images of that Royal visit, specifically to St. Pauls in Daybrook previously, probably on Picture the Past http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/ under a search for 'Arnold'. littlebro 234
The Royal visit took place on the 24th June 1914 just 4 days before the assisination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria which sparked the Great War. Two links below take you to the relevant pages of the London Gazette London Gazette June 1914 Page 1 London Gazette June 1914 Page
