Cliff Ton 10,457
The map of Bus Routes seemed to go down pretty well, so here's more where that came from. It was a kind of Civic Guide to Nottingham published in the late 1940s; the modern equivalent would be a full-colour glossy brochure. But this was 70 years ago so things were a bit different. Here's some of the adverts from that book, which might bring back a few memories.

rob237 89
Excellent collection...thanks for posting. Some wonderful phrases within the blurb. Adding to Rog's "communicating bathroom", another gem is Victoria Laundry's "Ladies out-of-date shapes re-modelled..." Superbly tactful Cheers Robt P.
Cliff Ton 10,457
Great post Cliff. When did Hooleys move from Derby Road? They closed down at that site around 1999/2000, and the site is now occupied by a block of identikit apartments. They moved all their operations to their place at Loughborough Road, West Bridgford, but that only survived a few more years and then that became apartments as well

EileenH 496
Wonderful stuff, Cliff! Thank you for posting. I`d forgotten about the County Hotel next to the Theatre Royal. It`s not there now is it? What`s there now? And the Black Boy on Long Row. I remember that too. And Griffin and Spalding - dead posh! Great!
katyjay 5,090
I'm guessing a communicating bathroom was a bathroom between 2 bedrooms that could be shared, say by a family? Great ads. I didn't know there were Chevy's over there in the 40's.
Owdtite 2
Great post Cliff, thanks for sharing and thanks for the memories!! Owdtite.... !cheers!
Beefsteak 305
As stated great post A communicating bathroom was indeed one shared between two bed rooms Rog. The County Hotel was demplished when the Royal Concert hall was built in the late 70s Eileen Chevys would have come over during the war Katy
Limey 242
I bought my first car (ad in the EP) from Mr. Furse of W.J.Furse!
Cliff Ton 10,457
The description that intrigues me, which no-one else has picked up on, is the one in the County Hotel. What exactly was a 'Basket Lounge'?
rob237 89
Usually relates to a lounge with an open fire. The basket being used for the log/coal storage beside the fire. Shades of the former Park Tavern 'basket lounge' on Nuthall Road, which also had wicker chairs as a bonus... Cheers Robt P.

Cliff Ton 10,457
That's one of my first ever posts - and this is probably the first time I've seen it for more than 10 years. The good old days of Nottstalgia.
