Jeff Leadley’s dad was the Dr. Leadley at Cropwell Bishop yes, one of the best doctors I ever had. We lived on Radcliffe Road in Cropwell Butler from the early 70’s. I actually hated it as had moved from Tollerton and had to get 2 buses to school in WB. Yes I would live there now but not mid teens.

Although this has nothing to do with car dealers, as a follow on, I still keep in touch with the daughter of the Parnhams who had the post office in Cropwell Butler opposite the Plough pub. She was the same age as me and went to Notts Girls High. She now lives in Scotland.

Thanks for answering Mrs B. I had Drs Leadley and Hindley. We lived in Langar. I saw Dr Hindley's obit earlier this year, he was 85.

I had a classmate at High Pavement, (1960-65) whose Dad was a car dealer or garage owner.  Lad's name was Paul Harwood and I   think he lived somewhere Sherwood or Woodthorpe direction. That's all I remember.

There was definitely a Paul Haywood Autos in the 70s-80s.

 

And looking in old phone books; it was Main Street, Bulwell.

Paul Haywood became Paul Haywood Halfpenny, presumably on marriage. He was the owner of Sherwood Restorations, classic and sports car specialists in Southwell. He died about five years ago. I knew him through my interest in sports cars. He was born in 1946. Could this be the person?

Paul was just Paul Halfpenny when he lived near me as a kid...ie No 1, Llanberis grove in the fifties.   Brother Rodger and Mum and Dad...Strict Mother .....couldn't come out to play on a Sunday... His Dad I think had a decorating business and was very interested in sports cars.

I think he had a sales pitch in Kirklington before he moved to Southwell. I call in quite often and know his son Alex who now runs the business. I bought a Lotus Elise from them a few years ago

Nope. Definitely Paul Harwood, who would be my age now, so his Dad would be doing well to still be with us. Itwas Paul's dad who bought one of the original Capri's.

Llanberis Grove in, and past, the fifties was considered as 'rather rather'. Do you remember Pat? Sheldon who lived opposite Llanberis Grove next to the garage. She was the daughter of Mrs Sheldon, secretary at Ellis School. For a brief period I lived with my parent at the terraced houses just below Llanberis until the mid sixties.

I must have car dealers on the brain as this one came to me in bed last night.

I used to work in Bulwell and there was a car dealer on the corner of Cinderhill Road and Leonard Street. This was about 1977/79. His name was Victor Wild. Very small place with only a few cars for sale at a time. I hung my nose over an old Volvo B20 saloon but bought a late model Morris minor with the 1100cc engine from him. I gave him a lift home once and he lived in a lovely house in Mapperley. He had a son who was an officer in the Navy I think.

Around 1970 my sister ordered a new convertible from Trumans on Derby Road.

The previously unseen sales manager phoned and said her car was ready for collection, and presumably, as she was "Just a Woman", he would on collection explain all the controls to her.

My sister as well as being highly intelligent made members of the opposite sex trip over their tongues, clearly traits that run in the family LOL. "Condescending" said my sister, "Let him explain" said my mother.

On an evening of drizzle the grey templed suave sales manager drove along Derby Road and eyes on my sister rather than the road ran the car under the back of a lorry. 

" I do not know what to say" said he, "Say something about very big discounts" said she.

Many moons ago when we still lived in Northern Arizona, I went down to Phoenix for the day. Hubby said, call in this dealership and look at this car. See what you think. So I did, the car salesman showed me the car I was interested in. It had a narrow line painted along the side below the windows. The salesman pointed it out to me and said, I know how you ladies like the stripe down the side. Sale lost, the twit.

I was very lucky to have two older brothers. One had his own garage and was probably one of the most honest mechanics I have known (to me anyway). The other would have sold anything to make a buck and was successful doing that for his entire life. Above all, they respected their ladies and especially their little sis. Our mum subscribed to the old way of keeping house and raising us kids but in her own way was quite independent. Dad went on two buses to work at Players for forty years.

Just look at history for the big picture and see how many women have made a difference in the world over the centuries.

Certainly the world that we know has changed for the better but there are still a lot of places where it hasn’t.

Also, my cousin Howard Duke owned Fine Cars  near the Futurist cinema.

 

The death of Jeff Leadley was more recent than I thought; it only happened in 2010.

I was only eight at the time, Alpha. Couldn't have gone on my own. Strange thing was, my mother was a sun worshipper and my father didn't like hot weather (neither do I). I'd have thought she'd be keen to go.
