wheatstraw 3
re Jack Brentnall's Music Shop. Jack lived in Burton Joyce and when visiting the shop used to wear a huge astrakhan fur collared coat. Apparently he made his money on the black market duribg the war. The great Colin Staples was the manager and when I worked there, briefly, in the early 70's, another colleagues was a guitarist called Phil Boot(Kopper Wyne) who subsequently had a guitar repair shop in Long Eaton. At that time, Colin Staples band were backing Champion Jack Dupree on tour as well as a residency at The Imperial. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLO4GQuHuus
Bilbraborn 1,594
Anyone ever get kicked out of Farmer's for spending too much time in the listening booths?
Guest
You had Bradleys records next door to Thraves on Clumber street. Fox's in vic centre and opposite Elite cinema next to Coomes? Ace records moved to Mansfield rd then bottom of Wollaton st. Revolver records opposite Woolies . Hmv above pronuptia on Wheeler gate. And our price opposite corner pin next to Top Man. Now its ROBS or e-bay!!
TheBeanCounter 1
The record department in Rediffusion on Angel Row was in the basement. You had to walk past the desks where you paid for the television rentals to get to it. It had the old listening booths and before Selectadisc arrived it was the place to get imports. On may occasions the shop had to be cleared because so many people were packed into it and it was probably a hazard. The shop was run by a man called Les May who went on to be the manager of the first HMV in Nottingham on the corner of Wheeler Gate and Hounds Gate. This was above what is now a Clarks shop. Robbie 39
Hi TheBeanCounter, I remember the Redifussion record department, back of the shop in the basement, we spent hours down there amongst the crowd, listening to records and socialising. Les certainly knew his records, there were also a couple of girl assistants who worked there as I recall. Any records not in stock Les would take orders and get them in, I remember along with many others ordering Boogaloo Party by The Flamingos, which we had to wait about three weeks for it to arrive. Dave 48 847
Hi Robbie: I am in touch with one of those girl assistants who worked there on The Soul Source Website.....Her name is Sherrie Bennett does it ring any bells ? She now lives in County Cork.
Robbie 39
Hi Dave, It's an unusual name and it does sound familiar, it could well be her. I used go down there from the summer of 1968. I am sure the girl was quite tall, I think taller than Les. But it's such a long time ago.
Dave 48 847
Hi Robbie , Got in touch with Sherrie and she confirmed that Les May was her boss and that they both moved to H.M.V.
Robbie 39
Hi Dave She must have been the assistant I remember, I can visualise her and Les behind that high counter. It certainly was a great place for sourcing soul records and meeting with fellow mods. I was talking to Rob Smith (Hurts Yard), he is still DJing and his shop just looks the same, like a tip. Having said that, years ago I needed to replace a couple of my records that got nicked from a club, The Right Track by Billy Butler and Do Unto Me by James and Bobby Purify and although the shop was upside down he had no problem replacing the vinyl.
Dave 48 847
Rob Smith is a legend in his own lifetime LOL. I see him most weekends at various local soul nights and further afield as well. He still travels all over the country and is one of the most respected and knowledgable DJ'S around not only soul music but all genres. You are right about his shop.....an absolute tip but knows where everything is .

Johndoley 3
Well remember being stopped by the commissioner in griffin and spalding( think that was the name of the shop, memory's not what it was) while going to buy the Rolling Stone, Their Satanic Majesty's Request, don't know what he thought I was going to do, wish I had that LP now, just been offered one for £
Michael Booth 7,364
I've got that Rolling Stones album, Johndoley. I didn't know it was worth £100.
barclaycon 569
Ah but does your copy have the fresnel lens on the front, that moves the picture when you tilt it ? That's the one that's worth all the money.
Bubblewrap 3,815
#111 Just for you Johndoley
Johndoley 3
Thanks for that, not seen that before, the mono one is worth even more, check it out on eBay, as mentioned, it's the hologram that makes it worth the money, thanks again
barclaycon 569
Yeah. That particular lens thing is apparently called 'lenticular' printing. Something I wasn't aware of until I looked it up on Wiki. You used to get it on toys etc. as it gave a crude kind of 3D effect. I had always thought of it as a fresnel lens as it has that kind of 'ribbed' plastic shape. Anyway, that's the one that commands big bucks. The album itself is not one of their best. Though it did have a few good tracks on it - She's A Rainbow', 2000 Light Years from Home. Their psychedelic period. The Bill Wyman vocal track 'In Another Land' is unintentionally hysterical ! Guest
The padded sleeve version is ultra rare! There is a very short track on this lp . I have it on a fan club single called cosmic xmas-- if you spin the lp fast with your finger-- "we wish you a merry xmas" can be heard.
