mick2me 3,033
The building of the new Tesco in Beeston, entailed knocking down many buildings. as discussed elsewhere. Petmart was one of them. Today Joey Zlotowitz arranged a surprise for his mum and Dad, Steve and Carol, the former owners. Former staff, customers, The Lord Mayor of Broxtowe Pat Lally, BBC Radio Nottingham, and a local Press Reporter, were presemt for the unveiling of a plaque to comemorate the business. Tesco who provided refreshments, were pleased to have the plaque mounted on their wall and told us they had heard many stories of Petmart, From their customers. Petmart Beeston, Gone but not forgotten.
littlebro 234
A little trivia not well known is that according to the Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service archives, the Pet Mart building was in fact Beestons first fire station. The archive records (which is obviously a little out of date): "Before the advent of the Fire Service as we now know it each area was responsible for creating its own Fire Brigade. The Beeston Fire Brigade was established in June 1892 according to the rules and regulations of the Beeston Local Board. The original nineteenth century station itself was about 100 meters from the present station and is still in existence, in use as a pet shop. The compliment consisted of a superintendant, a forman and eleven fireman who were instructed to pull the engine to nearby fires instead of waiting for the horses (the engine being a manual pump). Steam was not considered until 1902 and a Dennis motor fire engine not delivered until 1929. In October 1904 it was proposed to build a tower (due to the poor condition of the hoses left on the floor, cost per length £ 2-10-0) The cost of building the station at Stoney Street was £346. This money was borrowed from the Prudential Insurance Co and was sanctioned in 1906. These premises were used until 1964 when the new Fire Station was built at its present location (Officially opened in 1965)."

mick2me 3,033
Talking of the 'new' Beeston Fire Station? I am sure when I last noticed it, it was being used as a base by (Tesco?) Building contractors. Or it may like many fire stations be in the process of being rebuilt? Or Perhaps also not long for this world?
littlebro 234
The new-new fire station is on Hassocks Lane, off Queens Road. The Station Road site is destined for demolition and sits on the proposed tramline. I also think the multi-storey car park days are numbered.
