BK it’s the order that you work out equations.  Each letter stands for a different function.

example:

2 + 3 x 5 = 17 (not 25).
The x is always worked out before the +

 

There are more BODMAS rules but that example will do

As if the Ian Paisleyesque tones weren't punishment enough, there was also the  undecipherable scrawl all over the board, chalk/board duster/wooden ruler/hardback text book missiles to dodge and the threat of burning in hell/eternal damnation for not being Catholics!

 

Maths was just boring compared to all that!

I don't recall when I learned it but nowadays BODMAS is covered in Primary School.

The order in which the mathematical 'operators' are considered is:

Brackets

Order (meaning powers and roots in this context - sometimes cited as Indices, making the acronym BIDMAS)

Division

Multiplication

Addition

Subtraction
