catfan 14,793
I always thought it was someone in engineering ! Cheers Den.
denshaw 2,871
Might have been Mr Lowrie, chief engineer.
catfan 14,793
I certainly hope so Den, what a pious arrogant barsteward he was He once visited Bulwell depot early one morning to give a night-man a rollicking for catching the side of a bus on one of those steel girders that the roof was fixed to after the bus slid sideways in very slippery conditions. After giving the rollicking he got in his car, a Ford Granada Ghia & backed it in to a steel girder ! That made a LOT of people very happy ! There IS a God !
denshaw 2,871
Why was his car inside the depot? Not the most popular man.
catfan 14,793
Cos he was the Chief Engineer ! In the depots he could do whatever he wanted.
roger peatman 337
I remember John Lowry well --- I was the night fitter at Trent Bridge depot and he walked in at 11.30 one night --- I started at 11.00 and he caught me in the timekeeper's office reading the paper -- I hadn't even got my overalls on --- I thought I was in trouble , but funnily enough , all he did was remind me of the time and off he went. -- I never heard any more about it !! bamber 128
From memory, I think there was an issue with the bendy buses' transmission that didn't suit the hilly sections of the Arnold route. Which is why they ended up on the NTU shuttle to Clifton.
Oztalgian 3,271
# Tomlison 734 reminded me of this Limerick There was an old man from Darjeeling Who boarded a bus bound for Ealing The sign on the door said Don't spit on the floor So he sat and he spat on the ceiling
PeverilPeril 3,279
I've been trying to remember the name a bus service that I used in the 50's from Broadmarsh to Newark. The Bus's were painted grey. I used to get off at Farndon to go fishing.
Bubblewrap 3,815
Possibility Gash's ?
TBI 2,351
I think it would be Gash, Nottingham to Newark. Weren't the early buses livery blue/grey?

Merthyr Imp 729
Gash's ran from Huntingdon Street though: 1
PeverilPeril 3,279
Second reply - 1st one vanished? Thanks for your replies about Gash's service - and yes it was from Huntingdon St. The bus in #772 could have been the very one I used.
Guest
I could live in that=#772.
Deepdene Boy 642
With reference to Methyr Imp's post #661, showing the photo of NCT Fleetline 78, I am pretty sure that the blinds are indeed showing the service number as 33. The bus would in fact be on the then newly introduced Saturday Park & Ride service 303 from South Sherwood Street to the Forest Recreation Ground. As NCT buses only had two track blinds at that time, they would show 33 as it would not be confused with any exsiting service number.
katyjay 5,090
Welcome Deepdene boy, do I take it you used to live on Deepdene Way?
Deepdene Boy 642
Yes,number 54, but that was 50 years ago. I have been exiled from Nottingham since 1977.
Merthyr Imp 729
You could very well be right, Deepdene Boy, and that explains why I bothered to take the photograph.
catfan 14,793
#775. Deepdene Boy is quite possibly correct, those Daimler's did in fact only have two destination number blinds fitted. This could have been on an occasion when NCT were struggling for buses & has a last resort would use any available bus on that service.
Deepdene Boy 642
Here is a really unusual sight, AEC Regent V 273 working on the Central Area Free Service 77 in January 1976. I have no other memories of double deckers on the 77/88s and this is the only such photo that I have come across. https://flic.kr/p/ras6hk
catfan 14,793
#780 as per 779.
