Old Nottingham City Transport Single Decker

Old Market Square , Nottingham c1960s

King Edward Street, Nottingham 1976 Former site of Central Market after it moved into the Victoria Centre & was being used as temporary parking for the Nottingham City Transport buses Ph

There's some interesting cars there to, Austin A35, Ford Escort behind the bus- first use of the Escort name, Austin Metropolitan above that, and a Rover 100?. Great picture.

The car you are referring to as a Rover 100 is either a 60, 75 or 90 of 1955-58 vintage. One day a photo of mine will turn up. It is a particularly good picture I think. I can't remember when you could actually drive in front of the council house!

Yes he was, portly would describe him.

He owned a fish & chip shop at the side of Oakleigh Lodge SC which when he was driving buses his missus ran the chippy !

Can't remember Richard Bills but remember Richard Bull.

You would have driven my mum; she worked at Boots in those days and used the buses from Clifton.

The "works specials" left from Boots just after 9pm and went to Clifton.Where we were supposed to turn around the ladies would always shout and ask us to go up the road to the chippy. We always did. Then it was back to Boots for the men coming out at 10pm.Same route.Same proceedure.Great people, always fun.Too bad I can`t remember the names of the streets, but it`s been over 40 years. In my minds eye,I could probably do it from memory, cus my aunt and uncle lived on Colebourne Rd. so I still remember.

My mum worked afternoons, so she caught the bus around 1.30pm and came home on the 5pm.

A more amazing coincidence is that I also had cousins who lived on Colesbourne Road.

Clifton last stop would have been Langstrath Road Nr Green Lane ?

Not sure, because we lived at the bottom end of Clifton (near the traffic lights) so I don't know where the bus finished at the other end.

The first bus in Britain to be powered by human excrement ran from Bristol to Bath on the number 2 route.

Is that picture when the terminus was at Westdale Lane? The 31 was extended farther along Mapperley Plains to Somersby Road about 1956, but I seem to remember they also built a wide layby so that the buses could turn there without having to reverse. Is there anyone out there who can say how they did the manoeuvre at Westdale Lane? Did they turn into Westdale Lane and then reverse round the corner onto Mapperley Plains, or did they turn in one of the side-roads off Westdale Lane? I can't remember ever going to the terminus (although I certainly did many times up to the age of 18 months!) My later childhood journeys on the 31 to see my auntie and uncle were only as far as Porchester Road.

Hi Stephen,Blackie here.New to the site and have been trolling through some past comments.Your reference to the terminus for the 31 route got my old grey cells working.I don`t recall the terminus being at Westdale Lane. I thought it was more towards Porchester Rd. at the top of Woodthorp Drive?.There used to be a small triangular shaped island with a car showroom beside it and I seem to recall buses turning there.I do recall the terminus further along Plains Rd.and the turn-around as I used to drive the 31 and 50 route when they operated out of the old Sherwood Depot.I also remember every terminus had a time/punch clock for the conductor to punch his way-bill.There was also one on Mansfield Rd.by the tennis courts before Woodthorp Dr on the way into town.which they had to punch.A good way to keep the buses on time.I remember as a kid riding in the old Regents, then years later driving them. When did they take them out of sevice?

Green Lane / Langstrath Road junction.

Some of the women wanted to be dropped at the bottom of Green Lane but NCT said no, Langstrath Road it is.

Could have been Boots trying to pay less of a subsidy for the bus.

Hi Mick.Had a quick look at the map of Clifton ( I think there has been some changes,Ha,Ha.) The route we took came along Farnborough Rd. turned on Southchurch Dr.then onto Green Lane ( I think) We were supposed to turn around up there some-where and go the same way back, but the chippy was further up so we continued on,then turned right onto Clifton Lane to get back to Clifton Bridge. You have to realize,It`s been over 40 years and some-times things get a little foggy for an old Arnold lad !
