.... 23
The props and other supportive paraphernalia have been there for many a year, Ian.
BeestonMick 263
#24 - Yes that's right, that and the fact that some idiots set fire to it [The Major Oak] inside in the 80's. I seem to think it was punks that did it but I could be lying.
.... 23
Sad to hear that if somebody did that. The type of fencing around the tree wouldn't keep anybody out though, it's more just a symbolic 'keep out' gesture.
FLY2 10,108
I've a life long reminder of the cladding on the Major Oak, as I have a permanent scar as a result of gashing my knee on it when I was about 6.
BeestonMick 263
The Duke of Portland's Horses rising from the dead at the Major Oak It's amazing what you can find when you look hard enough, what a great image.
StephenFord 866
Are they the famous "ten o' clock 'osses" that my mother in law used to talk about?!
parmitage 127
Thanks for that Carni - I used to go past it when my kids were young on our visits to relatives and they used to call it the rock that fell from the moon. We used to come through Castle Donington - past the key house and I would always tell them the story of how the key ended up on the roof. Best wishes Peter
broxtowelad 175
In the 1960's a bike ride to the Hemlock Stone was a regular trip for me and any mates from the Broxtowe estate. If we fancied a longer trip we would then go on to Dale Abbey.
firbeck 859
That spiked fence around the Hemlock Stone has been there as long as I can remember, certainly it dates from the early 50's.It certainly discouraged us from trying to climb it as kids, falling to the ground was one thing, getting impaled was another. The only way to get to the top was on the other side from the road, this involved pulling oneself over an overhang, very risky,I was never tall enough to reach decent handholds, but one of my mates once managed it when we were kids, he got to the top, the only person I ever saw climb the 'Stone'. Have the trees been cleared from the top of the hill yet so the full view can be appreciated.
