Through this door...and it's the original, although painted black in my day...I walked with my mum one cold morning early in 1962. I was just 4 years old. The door led to Miss Smith's office and my mu

How many Berridge children have secreted themselves inside this niche situated in the playground which fronts the old infant building, hoping to be left behind when the bell rang at playtime's close?

Sitting on this exact spot, facing the stationery cupboard in Mr Parr's classroom, in spring 1969, I sat my 11+ exam.

Jill and I have agreed a system. I’m uploading the images and Jill is providing what information there is below them. Sorry if this has caused some confusion. I should have explained.

Here’s another Berridge group. Jill will comment with her research on it.

Teacher was Mrs Williams, being Welsh, we did St David's day service on the Hall stage. I did a short piece on Montgomeryshire

Welcome, Dummysock, to a fellow Berridge pupil.

You mention a Mrs Williams. What year would this be? I'll explain my reason for asking in due course as it could be someone else entirely but I think I may know who she was.

I look about 9 or 10 years old, so 1960 to 61.  I started Berridge in 1956 and left 1963.  I have the originals of these school photos and send them to Alan Randal who was a friend in those bygone days

Back row, Mrs Williams, ?, Russell ?, Charles Flowers, Pete Chetwin,?, Robert Tarrant, Stephen Howard, Peter Meakin, Andrew Kersey, Stephen Garner

Thanks for clarifying that, Dummysock. She's not the person I thought. She was around much later.  You would have overlapped to a large extent with my sister who was there from 1955 to 1961.

We love these photos and thanks for making them available. I hope to find lots more to fill the gaps!

Do you remember Mrs Platt, very scary infant teacher?

I find after all those years, that it is easier to put names to the photograph, rather than recalling teachers so No, I don't recall her.

In my final year at Berridge, I used to visit the headmaster every Friday afternoon to get the daily attendance figure to put onto a graph that I had created. However, I can not remember his name

J W Baugh replaced D A Griffiths in September 1961.  Baugh had high standards and was intent on making a good name for the school. Many parents disliked him but he and I got on like a house on fire. Sadly, he died not long after his retirement.

From Jill. Mr Kemp who scared the life out of me. Thankfully I dodged him as a teacher. Miss Sparrow is pictured centre stage. This is the first time I’ve ever seen Kempy with a smile on his face.

The girls liked him. He seems to have been fine with them but then he did have daughters of his own. I never had any contact with him other than presenting him with his leaving gift and once being sent into his classroom to borrow some chalk. I was very nervous about going in but he just beamed at me!

I can still hear in shouting ‘waken up boy’ at some poor youth who’d caught his attention. I always though at the time ‘waken up’ was a strange phrase which is why I recall it. I have a feeling it was him who presided over the room when I took my 11 plus.

Good evening all - newbie here!

I've tracked an ancestor to 69 Bateman Street. His name was Raymond Fenn, who found his way from Tunbridge Wells, via Wiltshire, to Ida Eversley (living at the above address in 1939 with her mother, Annie Eversley). They married in 1941, remaining at the above address. They had a son, Richard, in 1944 who sadly passed away in 1956.

Looking at old maps, I believe the nearest school would be Berridge and he would be there from '48/9 until '56. Am I right in my assumptions?

Thanks in advance

Lisa

Welcome, titchybee.  There are a few around who were at Berridge during that time and you may find his name on one of the photos on this thread.  He's slightly older than my sister who was there from 1955 to 1961 but someone may remember him.

However, it's worth remembering that not everyone who lived so close to the school actually went to Berridge. Some attended Scotholme.  Scotholme was on Fisher Street which ran between Berridge Road and Beaconsfield Street.

Yesterday was our latest Berridge visit. A hot day and glorious weather to boot.

Sadly, some were not able to join us but it was wonderful to see Letsavagoo, Mrs Letsavagoo, Jane Humphreys, John Heawood, Geoffrey Hollington, Colin Richardson, Debbie Noon, Martyn Jewers, Noel James and John Preston.

A brilliant day full of memories.

Pardon my ignorance Jill, but when you organise these school visits for old scholars, is the school open and obviously you have to arrange it with staff/head. Are the children aware of visitors?   B.
