titchybee 0
Good evening all - newbie here! I've tracked an ancestor to 69 Bateman Street. His name was Raymond Fenn, who found his way from Tunbridge Wells, via Wiltshire, to Ida Eversley (living at the above address in 1939 with her mother, Annie Eversley). They married in 1941, remaining at the above address. They had a son, Richard, in 1944 who sadly passed away in 1956. Looking at old maps, I believe the nearest school would be Berridge and he would be there from '48/9 until '56. Am I right in my assumptions? Thanks in advance Lisa
Jill Sparrow 9,253
Welcome, titchybee. There are a few around who were at Berridge during that time and you may find his name on one of the photos on this thread. He's slightly older than my sister who was there from 1955 to 1961 but someone may remember him. However, it's worth remembering that not everyone who lived so close to the school actually went to Berridge. Some attended Scotholme. Scotholme was on Fisher Street which ran between Berridge Road and Beaconsfield Street.

Jill Sparrow 9,253
Yesterday was our latest Berridge visit. A hot day and glorious weather to boot. Sadly, some were not able to join us but it was wonderful to see Letsavagoo, Mrs Letsavagoo, Jane Humphreys, John Heawood, Geoffrey Hollington, Colin Richardson, Debbie Noon, Martyn Jewers, Noel James and John Preston. A brilliant day full of memories.
Beekay 3,673
Pardon my ignorance Jill, but when you organise these school visits for old scholars, is the school open and obviously you have to arrange it with staff/head. Are the children aware of visitors? B.
Jill Sparrow 9,253
It's done in conjunction with their Berridge history project, Beekay. Ticks a number of boxes on their National curriculum requirements. They can ask questions of us who were pupils over fifty years ago and compare/contrast our experience with their own in the present day. It's a valuable resource for the school and a trip down memory lane for us!
Beekay 3,673
Thank you. I often wish Radford Boulevard school did the same sort of thing. Perhaps it's because I left in 1958, that for me, it's just a pipe dream. Many thanks Jill. B.
Jill Sparrow 9,253
I don't know whether Radford Boulevard school is still in existence, Beekay, but if it is, all you have to do is ask. They are normally very keen to show former pupils around.
Beekay 3,673
Jill, the building itself is still there but looks likes it's been unused for ages. The structure has been discussed before on this forum. I've seen pictures of inside on here. I have asked Mr.Google before, as to whether there is anything about the school. There did used to be a 'Radford Old Scholars Association ', but I think this may have fizzled out. In the few years I've been on here, I've never found anyone who went there. However, I do remember quite a few names. So if any of you out there remember "Kingy ".

There are FB Groups for probably every school in Nottingham (past or present), and also FB Groups for specific areas of Nottingham. Thanks to them, I've been in touch with many people who I last had contact with 50+ years ago. And there's always someone who has photos to prove what you looked like back then. Jill Sparrow 9,253
@Beekay We all said yesterday how fortunate we were that Berridge not only still exists as a building, it is still a working school. Many of similar age have been demolished or rendered redundant by modern rebuilds which won't last nearly as long. Lucky for us! Grimston Road is still there, as well CT. I know because I walked the length of it yesterday before visiting St Peter's church three days before what would have been my parents' 73rd wedding anniversary! Beekay 3,673
My eldest brother Keith got married there Jill, back in 1960 (I think).

Jill Sparrow 9,253
Was she also a Berridge pupil, CT? My mum was.
Cliff Ton 9,515
No, she went to Douglas Infants & Juniors - living around Willoughby Street, Lenton, in those days. In Secondary years she went to Cottesmore.
Beekay 3,673
CT., I too went to Douglas school, 1948 -1954. When starting at Boulevard, dinners were always taken at parts of Cottesmore school. We also used to have some prefab classrooms there for certain lessons. Us oiks used to think the proper part of Cottesmore was for posh kids. I would have thought your mum would have gone to Lenton primary, which was nearer to Willoughby Street. After all, Douglas would have been a fair old trek for little legs. B.
Cliff Ton 9,515
They moved from Willoughby Street area to Grimston Road around 1936-37. That would've coincided with my mum hitting secondary school age. Cottesmore was obviously very close to Willoughby Street so presumably she started there as her nearest 'local'. If they'd moved to Grimston Rd earlier, maybe she would've gone to another school.
