Mess 616
Note the famous 'Mikado Cafe'. During the 1950's one well-known Nottingham clippie, name of Hazel Nutt would meet her friends from the Nottm. City Transport Dept in here every Saturday morning. They'd wear their best clothes - she told me - and sit at the window, sup their coffee and take the scene! I remember a barmaid in The Grosvenor on Mansfield Road called Hazel Nutt. It was in the late 60's when upstairs was a Berni Inn. Would this be the same lady?
jackson 301
Hello Mess I doubt it. Hazel Nutt the Queen of Bus Conductresses served on the buses for years - perhaps up until the early 70's; she was well established in her job.
katyjay 5,090
It conjurs up quite a picture in my mind, of Hazel behind a bar. As she was known to physically throw men off the bus for bad behaviour, the bar would not have needed a bouncer on the door!
jackson 301
Hi there Kath, not only do you have a brilliant memory but an active imagination. If you google in: 'Fascinating memories of a wonderful character' you'll come across my article on the well-known/ well remembered Hazel - or the beginnings of it; in which your name, or the first half of it is mentioned
katyjay 5,090
I found the article, Christine, but you can only read a little, without joining to see the rest.
