Cliff Ton 10,457
This shows a couple of places I don't think have been mentioned before. This is Milton Street, facing the bottom end of Trinity Square; Victoria Hotel and Station would be just off to the left I assume the Marsden's place is connected to the grocery shop people.
katyjay 5,090
Now, that's one I've never heard of before. Does the pic say what year it was?
Cliff Ton 10,457
It says 1952, which fits with the parked cars. I don't remember these places either, but '52 is before I appeared on the planet so I have an excuse.
poohbear 1,360
Late fifties used to play snooker in the Mechanics opposite...then at 9ish call in there for a coffee every week..it closed at ten.But I'm sure I would have remembered Marsdens name...I seem to remember it was another branch of Cappocis at the time (or a very similar outfit) ....around '
hippo girl 1,995
There was a marsdens on bramcote hills in the sixties......
poohbear 1,360
There was one on Derby Road next to the cinema, Priory Island. One on High street (Basford Road) Basford...another on Arnold Road,Bestwood.
susyshoes 69
wonder what happened to them all. did they get bought out 'en mass' or just closed down one by one
Cliff Ton 10,457
I think they went the same way as all of the small/medium stores.........they couldn't survive in a world full of Sainsburys and Tesco and Asda. It's quite a list when you think about it....... Marsdens and Farrands and Lyons and Burtons and the others you remember when you were a kid
poohbear 1,360
And now they all wish they hadn't sold up as they see crappy tescos opening up exactly the same medium sized shops in the suburbs...the only difference being they are open 17 hours a day and don't sell what you want...but what they decide you should have. mick2me 3,033
At a price they decide you should pay!

Cliff Ton 10,457
And another, with the Welbeck Hotel further along Milton Street. The space where the cars are parked behind the wall would become the multi-storey car park (and was previously the site of the old Holy Trinity Church )
Diane Corah 0
I was very interested to find this item about Marsden's Cafe, in Nottingham. My Mum was a waitress at Marsden's shortly after the second world war, before she married in 1947. Such a pity these places have gone! I think in its day it was quite a smart cafe, where the ladies who lunch, would regularly go. My mum had quite a few stories to tell.
Tange 0
I have heard a lot about Marsdens cafe from my parents. They used to go there when they were courting & had their wedding reception there in 1939. Thank you for posting.
