May i also tell a little story about Arkwright St shopping which remains with me to this day circa 1963 I went into" KEEVERS" (spelling may be wrong) to buy a scalextric for my young brother which was

Around 1969/1970 I ran a second hand book & record shop on Arkwright Street called "Moonshine". It was so phenomenonally successful that no-one on the planet apart from myself now remembers it. Wh

My aunty Grace went to live on Arkwright Street in February 1958 - she lived in a flat over the top of Jessie Robinson's fish shop, next door to a butchers which was on the corner of St Saviour's Stre

The indian that you mentioned would that be near to the Navy club which i was a member for a number of years in the 60s, and if so i recall it being called the Purple Elephant, I mybe wrong and i stand to be corrected.... I think it was opposite the Club....

Bip - there was a resturant on the left, just after Queens Road - called the Golden Curry. I know it was still there when the meadows were being demolished. We used to get the occasional mouse scampering down the tables! The guy who ran it - a lovely man, but I forget his name - then moved up to the restaurant on Alfreton Road - just below where Starline Taxis had their offices. Does this ring any bells?

I too was a member of that club in the late sixties and into the seventies.

Do you remember the sixpence one arm bandit in the bar on the first floor.

I would empty that machine most Sunday nights, that would be the only time I would go there.

I don't recall the Golden Curry restaurant but the Purple Elephant was the place I had my first curry at.

Bip.

Does anyone kow where Orange Street was ? I have found Orange gardens . My grandfather was born on Orange Street in 1900 and would be iterested to know what kind of house it was. I am assumig some type of terrace. His family moved to Colwick Road some time between 1905 to 1916.....

You can make out the name of the street just below the red (A60) sign - if you could walk a straight line from Orange Street across Bunbury then you would be in our back garden on Wilford crescent East.

aaah The Medders,,,,

Just past the bridge on the left was a jewellers shop. I had my first ear pierced there in '62. This was quite a novelty, as I had only seen Gypsies & sailors with an ear-ring at that time. I only did it to be different !? Then look what happened.

In fact, on a flying visit to Nottingham with my Cornish lady-friend in about '84/5, I was stopped at slab square by a lady reporter from the Post who was doing a feature on 'Men with ear-rings'. The side of my mug was featured in the article.

----:----

On the right at about the same place was a sort of junk shop. I bought a silver crucifix from there, for 15/-. It turned out to be (so I was told later) a Russian Priests crucifix - though it had a London hallmark.

----:----

Most of my initial work at my first job (plumbing) was around the meadows.

----:----

I also worked at HACKWORTH's Butchers shop just off Awkwright street (can't recall the actual street now) where I made sausages and pies (won some trophies) boning out bacon & rendering down fat to make our own dripping. Boy oh boy, what a stink that made on a Wednesday morning !

I used to work on Arkwright street in a hairdressing salon called "Grace Bull". she also owned one in Beeston as well as Sherwood.

I also remember the bone factory as we called it and depending on the direction of the wind the smell from there was horrendouse.

I also had my first driving lesson on that street to.

I remember well many saturdays in the early 70s going to selecta disk on Arkright st....and browsing through all the 'junk' shops....seemed to be on every corner with their signs all over the wall advertising ' House clearance'

....but....

..............Can anyone remember a little further down the road ( nearer trent bridge ) a little old very dark shop with the scariest guy in it.....it sold old record 78s and even 16s ( first time i ever found out what that '16' on my dancette was for )...also sold Gramophones with big brass horns on...the shop didnt look like it had been touched for about 40 years...nor did the guy in it.....He used to sit at the back behind a little counter had long grey hair ( bout as long as mine is now ) and had about 50 or so earrings in each ear that hung onto his shoulders...Massive rings on all of his fingers 'and' thumbs....the shop had records and old prams stacked up everywhere and all looked like they would tumble if you touched em...but he knew where everything was.......used to go and talk to him quite often after the first few shocks of seeing him....turned out to be a nice guy....cant remember his name or the name of the shop ...if it had one.......think when they flattened the meadows he would have been still sitting behind his counter in the dark.

And Jims Tattoos was right up the top near Trent Bridge

I don't think I have ever posted in this topic (Bloody unusual I hear you chorus) But I remember a shop down the other end of the Meadows (Not far from The Boots Social Club ,) called Soccer City. I vaguely remember going in there on a match day (Early 70s ) and it being a bit like an Alladins cave of footy related stuff. Unfortunately that was the only time I ever went in , as my pocket money only just covered the price of getting to and from the match, plus my entry fee.

Andy Bone had a place down there somewhere - he of the Itom stuff

or am I thinking of brealey-smiths who made fibre glass tanks fairings etc?

Did B.Smith move to Bulwell (or near). I was going to set up a Surfski Hire down here,,,, & i'm sure the first ones made were made at Bulwell by a company that did bike tanks etc - maybe just a coincy dance.

The junk Shop, I remember on a corner on the right going towards Trent Bridge.

Aroung 1970, I did a job for an old lady on Colwick Road, she gave me an old louspeaker,

Like a gramaphone horn. I sold it to that guy for a couple of quid!

Probably worth a bomb now. I have never seen another one?

On the right hand side that would be Blacknells, next to the Meadow inn. Brealey smith were on the same side closer to Trent bridge and i'm sure i saw little Nell the helicopter used in you only live twice Bond film in their window. The Junk shop could have been on the corner of Radcliffe St.

I remember Josie's and wasn't 'mushroom' bookshop originally on arkwright street? Can anyone remember the name of the restaurant with newspapered walls - it later moved to town?

A friend of mine had a flat above the pawnbrokers where we had regular all-night parties in the early seventies.

Mushroom book shop was on Arkwright street between the picture house and Ryhill (sp) street

As well as books you could also buy skins for them funny fags, when they left those premises they set up on Heathcote street more or less opposite Gee Dee's (or was that George street?)

There used to be a small tool shop on the west side of Arkwright St, just north of Kirke-White St, clos by was a cafe run by a couple of Spanish fellers.

Side of the Sir Richard Arkwright pub was an antique shop. Time period I'm on about was the mid to late 60's.

On the opposite side north of Kirke-White St was a Newsagents where I picked my paper and ciggies up on the way to work at Clifton pit.

I remember a cafe opposite the Meadow Inn, in it was an Expresso Coffee machine and a one armed bandit machine, not much else. The only antique shop i can remember was Scurrs on the corner of Muskham St, their daughter Liz married a mate of mine.

After the Barracuda it became 'Chaplins' circa 1989 (I worked there for a while.) I also used to deliver there when it was Food for thought in the early 80s .There was a mural on the wall painted by Rolf Harris and one of his famous 'Rolfaroo' signitures too . It's probably still there under a couple of coats of paint

Wrong antique store Den, the one I'm on about was on the right hand side of the Sir Richard Arkwright pub. I worked as a part time barman for Barry Price for a couple of years and we used to get a lady in who lived in the flat over the store.

Carol, I don't recall a Dave Turner, what did he do?? I was there as an apprentice electrician from 1964 until closure in 1968, mostly underground.
