Petrol & Diesel supplies

“You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time”.

Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the USofA (1809 - 1865)

I remember back in 1973 when we had the first petrol crisis, a customer stuck a note on a petrol pump:

“You can fuel some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fuel all of the people all of the time”.

Nothing like a bit of mass hysteria to keep the headline writers busy.

So why are people queuing all day for petrol? No-one has gone on strike. The tanker drivers have said they will strike at some point if they can't reach an agreement on various matters. At the moment they are working normally and delivering normally. Even if they do plan to strike, they have to give 7 days notice, so the earliest time when supplies might be disrupted is a week tomorrow.

The government have been helpful, firstly by telling people to stockpile petrol - then retracting that advice when it was pointed out that it was a serious safety hazard. Now they are telling people to fill up when the tank is half empty, but why? Supplies are still normal and if everyone behaved normally, we could all still just put petrol in whenever we needed it.

There may be a lot of intelligence out in the world somewhere.......but there are also a few big holes which common sense falls into and disappears

I remember a few years ago when we were in the same state.

A Derby taxi driver started to hoard petrol in his celler.

He bought a load of plastic dustbins and filled them.

Plastic dustbins were not designed to store petrol and they

all leaked the petrol into the floor of the cellar.

The petrol and fumes, spread along the whole street of

Terraced houses, and the whole street had to be evacuated.

Half the fire brigade were parked up on standby on the street for

weeks. The occupants all had to be found temporary accommodation

until it was safe to return.

Melbourne petrol prices (ULP) have been around the $AUD145.9 per litre for the past fortnight, having nudged $AUD150.0 and expectations for $AUD 160.0 in the coming days. LPG is now $AUD80.0 per litre and Australia sells it overseas for a fraction of that! Diesel is nearly always higher than petrol, by about 5-10 cents; even though it is a byproduct of petrol. Go country and the petrol prices rise accordingly with some of the more remote places at $AUD185.9 - 200.0.

All our Government can say is that we would be paying $2 a litre if our dollar was back at its parity level of 79 cents to the US dollar.

A consequence of the higher prices over here is a surge in petrol and number plate thefts and drive offs from petrol stations (guess what they are using the stolen plates for....no ID on the CCTV).

Then compare the general standard of living , and the freedom of speech between them and us.

For instance , we wouldn't be allowed this discussion in most of the places listed, or if we were it would only be a matter of time before some jackbooted thug came a tappin on the door with his size twelvezies !

Do you have fluctuating prices of fuel over there in England?? In Melbourne, we can have prices going up and down on a daily basis with some overnight hikes of up to 15cents per litre. Funny thing though, when the price rises and then dops back, it never drops back to the price level of the previous days.

Two major supermarkets, Woolies and Coles own the major petrol outlets and give you 4cents a litre discount dockets if you buy your groceries, grog etc from them. Sometimes the discounts can be 8cents or more but, the groceries are normally priced higher than the previous week if that happens and strangely, the major outlets miraculously match each others price rises. Of course, all deny collusion. Very few independent petrol stations are around now as they cannot compete with big boys.

The overnight price hikes are the worst and in the past, invariably before a weekend, holiday period or similar. People woke up to that and purchased fuel midweek. Petrol outlets now do it any old day.

Some refineries talking of closing down in Australia because of rising costs...Ha Ha!

They riot over in Africa, Asia and South America when petrol prices rise....we voice our concerns in the media and then accept it.

There's no fluctuations here Trevor, they go up by 1 or 2 p a week !! and tend to stay up.

Every now and again they drop a penny but in three months previous they have risen 10p !!

You are lucky in that regard then. It is Russian Roulette here at times when having to buy the go juice.

Asda garage West Bridgford was shut at dinnertime yesterday totally sold out, at Morrisons they were queuing round the block, heard you couldn't get into the store! sometimes use both if shopping there but long worked the effort, time and extra cost of getting to such not worth the odd pence saving on fuel price, as it was pulled in to empty local garage and filled up earlier
