ChrisB 150
Well no one seems to want the retail units in Trinity Square. So why not turn it into a decent bus station to replace the horrible Victoria Centre bus station!
DavidA 153
This. This was the Mechanics Institute/ Cinema, extending all the way back up on the left of the photo. Look at what is in this location today - isn't progress wonderful. Wow, that is a magnificent building. Thanks very much. By the way, I went to a comics fair in the monstrosityof a building where TK Max etc is now. That must have been around the late 80's. Don't tell me the Mechanics swapped that lovely building for the successor? If so, it can't have lasted that long.
Cliff Ton 10,457
I think (not certain) this is what went up when the Mechanics came down. But it didn't last very long.
ChrisB 150
The offices of the East Midlands Traffic Commissioners which did all road service licensing were in Trinity Square, at Birbeck House.
DavidA 153
Thanks. You lot are great!
DavidA 153
By the way, I looked on-ine for the Nottingham Mechanics to find out more about the old building, and discovered that they're still going : http://www.nottinghammechanics.com/home.htm
Compo 10,328
Post #106: My father worked on that building. He was a floor layer.
radfordred 6,284
Time to get excited Trinity Square will reopen this Saturday with a grand opening featuring live music from local artists Harleighblu and bitter strings. Ding Dang Do.
StephenFord 866
I'm all agog! - Whatever have they done to it this time?
Cliff Ton 10,457
See posts #87, 97 and 99. Then see if you can spot the difference. They've shuffled the concrete seating around a bit. I can't believe they are turning it into a major event.
FLY2 10,108
I couldn't give a toss, it's depressing and draughty. The only good thing in the area is Prezzos.
benjamin1945 16,139
Rebuild the Church and reinstate the Cemetary complete with Graves, (they won't mind) oh yes then the 'Bus stops' number 6 to Bestwood,17 to Bulwell,18 to Edwards lane, and 28 to Bestwood,.........that would be nice.

DJBrenton 738
I'm sat watching Harleighblu right now.
.... 23
I walked past earlier today as they were setting up the stage. Have to say in fairness to the much maligned Trinity Square that it now looks a very usefully laid out space to have small events such as today's. An improvement. Can't quite fathom the 'mini Madison Square Garden; chat but the article below shows how it lends itself to events now. http://www.nottinghampost.com/Trinity-Square-mini-Madison-Square-Garden-new/story-22056333-detail/story.html
briyeo 56
This image caused some confusion on a railway Facebook page yesterday, sorry about the quality. A lot of people couldn't separate it from the many demolition photos of Victoria station. Some thought it was printed in reverse :-) But it is the demolition of the Mechanics Cinema or Institute is it not?
briyeo 56
Colour image of the building. https://flic.kr/p/3Jx2Ju
Enigma. 1,533
when you enlarge it and flip it - it is indeed the demolition of the victoria station as you can see the hotel where it stands at a angle in the background
Merthyr Imp 729
I can't make sense of that viewpoint as being the demolition of the station. If it was that would be the back of the hotel and it's clearly the front. I think the original photo is correct and it's the demolition of the Mechanics.
Cliff Ton 10,457
I agree that it is Vic Station and the Hotel. In the "reversed" photo we are standing inside the entrance of Vic station looking to the Clock Tower on the outside, and we see the Hotel slightly set back from the Clock Tower (which it still is). The Mechanics building was this........... And that isn't this building (on the left).
Commo 1,292
Sorry for being a bit thick, but how can the clock tower appear to be opposite the hotel?
terence12 725
looking at the window surround of the demolished building, the same as the pic of the Mechanics, the building behind is part of the YMCA on Shakespear st., have many very happy memories of the Mechanics Cinema
Robbie 39
I used to go to the Moulin Rouge Cinema when they would let me to watch horror films which was just around the corner from the Mechanics building
Cliff Ton 10,457
Another angle of looking at the problem.........this is the Hotel today. The tower feature marked....... ...is the same tower on the original picture.
loppylugs 8,427
I'm with Commo on this. Perspective seems all funny. Vic station clock tower is on the same side as the Vic hotel. Has this picture been photoshopped or something. Surely the station clock tower should be behind the photographer and on his left?
