carni 10,094
That is the same in all the big shopping centers where ever you are,its a nightmare, trying to say no thanks with out sounding rude wears thin after you have been asked to try so many different car insurances, phone companies, eyebrow twirling,(cant remember what its called!)LoL,etc,In the end i just keep my eyes looking forward and just keep repeating no thank you. Pixie 162
you don't get as much in Vic centre, think iv been stopped all of once or twice by lovefilm, now I just make out I'm already a customer. the last one quized me about what package I had with them, so I had to lie and say I just live with someone who has it then walk faster. now they knock at the door despite having a no cold caller card at the window next to it and above the letter box... last week I had religious preachers have a good look through my living room window before knocking and cos they saw I was in, started asking through the letter box if I would answer and talk about who really controls us and the world. after 10mins (literally) of staying out the living room they finally left, not before putting through leaflets about god (not that I have anything against religious people, I have my own beliefs and I don't agree with people knocking on stranger's doors to preach at them)
barclaycon 569
All of these people rely on you being polite. They are, in fact, invading you privacy and wasting your time in order to try and part you from your 'hard earned'. I have no problem at all in telling these people to piss off in such situations - and I'm an easy going amiable sort of chap usually! As regards those religious nutters that bother you on a Sunday morning, if they are Jehovah's Witnesses just tell them you have been 'De-fellowshipped'. It's like Kryptonite to them! carni 10,094
44years ago i gave birth to my daughter at home, which at the time was my sisters house,my little baby was taken away in an incubator with under developed lungs and thankfully she fully recovered and is fit and fabulous,at the time i was very distressed and vulnerable and very young,my sister had to go out and my hubby was at work so i was alone,i opened the door to Jehovah's Witnesses, who saw i was distressed and offered to talk to me,i didn't have it in me to say no thank you so they came in,they had me kneeling on the floor praying and eventually left me with books to read, coming back the following week, leaving me upset,, I had to let my hubby see them when they came back,my reason for writing this is to say that some times these people don't realize that vulnerable people can be led into some thing they may not really want . Sorry i have strayed of Broad Marsh.
barclaycon 569
I'm sorry to hear of your distress Carni. Unfortunately, these people pray on the vulnerable and try to coerce others into being part of something that will eventually control their whole lives. Sadly I can speak from experience because several members of my family have suffered at the hands of these religious nutters. Like I say, it's better to nip these things in the bud. Personally I'm not bothered about offending people who are trying to fool me or make me think differently. My Dad always said never buy anything from the door, never get talking to anyone who cold calls, and never respond to anything that you didn't make enquiries about yourself. Pretty good advice I'd say.
carni 10,094
Very good advice, and my situation would never have arisen if i had the confidence and common sense then that comes with age.
Stan 386
As much as I am opposed to communism/socialism,I must admit the thoughts of 2 of their elite really are very profound, as are the thoughts of de Sade. Lenin: Religion is one of the forms of spiritual oppression which everywhere weighs down heavily upon the masses of the people, over burdened by their perpetual work for others, by want and isolation. Impotence of the exploited classes in their struggle against the exploiters just as inevitably gives rise to the belief in a better life after death as impotence of the savage in his battle with nature gives rise to belief in gods, devils, miracles, and the like. Those who toil and live in want all their lives are taught by religion to be submissive and patient while here on earth, and to take comfort in the hope of a heavenly reward. But those who live by the labour of others are taught by religion to practise charity while on earth, thus offering them a very cheap way of justifying their entire existence as exploiters and selling them at a moderate price tickets to well-being in heaven. Religion is opium for the people.
Stan 386
...and Marx: The foundation of irreligious criticism is: Man makes religion, religion does not make man. Religion is, indeed, the self-consciousness and self-esteem of man who has either not yet won through to himself, or has already lost himself again.
Stan 386
Back to Broadmarsh: I had a schoolfriend who on arrival at Nottingham Rail station was dismayed at the general state of our main rail port of entry and wrote about it in the `Post' I would make similar comments ,when arriving to Nottingham`s main bus terminus and shopping centre. poohbear 1,360
Looks like one of those ideological shopping malls built by the Communists to show the West what a wonderful life they are living under the red flag...while the peasants are living out of sight in their hovels. Mess 617
Used to love Charlie Town's shop. Used to pick up electronic bits for my guitar and amp around 1964. Didn't have much money back then as I was just finishing school so to be able to buy a single component to fix stuff was ideal. There was another electronics place on Shakespeare St too but I can't remember the name. I also remember catching buses to Clifton from the old Broad Marsh Bus Station. Back in the 50s it was only The South Notts service that went out there. Fantastic value for money bus service. I used it again in the early 70s when it was only 30p return to Loughborough where I worked. On a Saturday teatime in the 50s when my dad and I were returning from Meadow Lane I used to nag him silly to go in the Broad Marsh Café there but he would never take me in because if I didn't eat the tea my mum had prepared he would have been in the dog house. Drury Hill was magic especially if you were climbing the steps when a steam loco went past. The smell was wonderful. My dad who was born in 1915 used to tell me stories about how Broad Marsh was a no go area early in the 20th century until some tough Notts coppers went in and sorted it all out. Anybody add to this story?
Cliff Ton 10,464
Anybody add to this story? If you go back to the Nottstalgia homepage, go to the Search box at the top right corner of the page, and put in Broad Marsh, you will get all the previous Nottstalgia threads on the subject, including old Broad Marsh, the bus station, Drury Hill, etc etc. Enough to keep anyone occupied for hours. carni 10,094
I have been on the "search box" trying to find a thread for "Old Broad Marsh" and I can find lots of Broad Marsh threads but I'm not sure which one to add this post to. If you think it needs moving to another thread, please do. I saw this item whilst scanning the online newspapers this morning.I hope you enjoy reading it. http://www.nottinghampost.com/Streets-gone-Broad-Marsh-memories-live/story-26619817-detail/story.html 1
Cliff Ton 10,464
As you say carni, there are quite a few Broad Marsh threads. I've merged two and stuck your post on the end of them. So it's not quite where you put it !
