Try Bing Maps, best aerial photos you can view...

Beat me to it, but the aerial photos are higher res than Google Maps.

Re: the hi-res thing. It seems to depend on exactly where you are looking. On both Google and Bing if you look at the main urban areas the aerial views are hi-res, but if you are looking at an obscure village in the middle of open country-side the resolution isn't so good.

Great links. I have wanted to do a photography trip along the Beeston canal from the Trent for a while now. Thank's to the above, I know what it will look like all the way, great!

This is 1 of the photos, showing Wilford power station and Clifton colliery.

That's an interesting one to me, because you can see that the Power Station is still in the process of being built; the area facing the camera is still work-in-progress, and in those early days there was eventually a row of 6 chimneys.
