Public toilets - where did they all go?

I wonder how long those nice green tub chairs will remain in there before someone walks out with them.

The loss of public loos is purely down to misuse by druggies and faggots. Yet again, the law abiding suffer. I refuse to pay for a wee in these horrible cubicles, so dept stores or cafes have to suff

Hope they cleared everybody out first. In years to come it could be re-excavated, only to find a mummified corpse in one of the cubicles, still clutching his Sun.

I'm surprised nobody has yet mentioned the palace of Victorian plumbing, ceramic and glass which served the Embankment and lost when the Town Arms AKA The Riverbank extended. I seem to remember long rows of polished brass and white porcelain.

Outside was an important bus stop and waiting area where the trolley bus turned round to go back into Nottingham.

The Arboretum was that bad for flashers and touchers, one time my Mother took me into the ladies loo,she had taken a Bonomint- I being a pest climbed up on the seat to nose into the cystern...consequently my plastic sandles got filled!!

Crying with one leg in the sink, my Mum let rip at the park keeper.

There used to be a superb gentlemens' toilet in The Victoria Club when it was a fine dining restaurant and casino. (I'm talking back in the 70's). When you had finished washing your hands there was a flunkey standing behind to hand you a towel!

Another almost forgotten topic within a topic is Lavatory Attendants as they were called, later Toilet Attendants, men for the men's & women for the women's.

This job was given by the council to (usually) slightly disabled folk to keep them in employment, but as time went by & councils just believed in cuts they became a dying breed.

The embankment toilets mentioned were kept spotlessly clean & tidy, the brasswork was immaculately kept, a wash & brush-up service was also available for a small charge too.

A small bar of soap, a clean towell & a nice clean sink with hot & cold water on tap was provided.

This wash & brush-up facility was later withdrawn & replaced by "baby changing" facilities instead. This have been the start of the "think of the children" culture where nothing else mattered anymore.

Sadly those attendants are rapidly declining & can only think of one attendant at the Bullwell toilets & one in town on King Street.

Also noticed apart from mass closure of public loos, even the one in Bullwell Bus Station is locked at 6pm every night, NCC must think the public don't need loos after that time, I'm glad i'm not a bus driver anymore hellothere

Vandals are the biggest scourge of all time, public facilities being withdrawn due the wanton destruction of public property.

We need a real no nonsense approach to crime, until we get it we are stuffed.

The ones I remember with an attendant were those in the Market Square.

And I think they had some kind of turnstile or gate, if you wanted to go in to the other section to spend a penny.

I don't suppose Picture the Past will come up with anything relevant.

The toilets in Bulwell bus station were open 24 hours with an attendant 8 - 5, not any more loos locked now at 5pm, don't the public including bus drivers need a loo after 5pm anymore ?

Not all closures are due to homosexual activity or vandalism  etc, just this incompetent council trying to save money.

Thankfully, the bridge over Parliament St has been closed since last year. Thank Goodness I don't have to endure that route anymore. I always used to keep my hands in my pockets, and try not to touch anything on my way up or down the steps. Truly disgusting !

I used to live a couple of streets down from them, they had an attendant who polished all the brasswork and there was highly glazed brown tiles on the walls, also remember the big brass boxes on the cubicle doors where you put your penny and turned a polished brass knob to open the door

When I was a child, there were public toilets next to Hyson Green library and mum often nipped in there if she was caught short while out shopping.

Mum didn't like using public loos but the place was as clean as a whistle with gleaming brass work and sparkling tiles. A lady attendant in a white coat provided soap and steaming hot water for washing hands after using the loo. The cost was 1d but well worth it. There was never any unpleasant smell or mess.

Access to the gents was straight off the pavement via a wooden door. Whilst walking down Gregory Boulevard on Streetview,  I discovered that the buildings are still there.

If you look closely, you can still see where the GENTS sign was once affixed. Ladies walked through an archway and turned left into a building that stood at right angles to the road. The archway is now closed off by wooden doors. Presumably, these buildings are still used for some purpose but I've no idea what it might be. I was astounded to see they still existed at all.
