    I lived in the Meadders from about 1986 to 1991, I knew those shops well ! I can't remember what Medz used to be back then.

    Further back in time, Arkwright Street was built in 1860, but to begin with the ground was level here, and that corner was actually a bridge over (I think it says) Tinker's Leen. In 1866 the road was built up to cross the railway on a viadut, but still with the Leen bridge - it's still shown on www.old-maps.co.uk in 1885.

    Wasn't the building on the corner of Queen Street (centre of fourth photo) a disused bank ? I wonder if they knew there was a river in their basement :-)
