  1. There was a fire at Chilwell Depot, can't quite remember the year, but a complete warehouse shed went up in flames, set on fire by an irate storekeeper, who was later convicted and jailed for arson. Yes there was a massive explosion during the 1st World War when the Depot was used as a shell filling factory, I think it was 1916, production was resumed about month after, and the depot became known as the VC factory. Did you know that every other shell fired in the first world war was made at Chilwell. Eh I know, I work there!!!!

  2. I remember when I first moved to Clifton Estate (1954), which as most of us know, aint too far from W.Bridgford, well we scruffy kids thought everybody from Bread and Lard Island were millionaires, it's only when you get older that you realise how the nick name came about, they aint no better than ayone else! Another term for folk who came from ther was 'fur coat and no knickers' slywink

  3. Correct Mick, he used to run all the barrow boys in town. He was a pro boxer for a while but hgot a bit punch drunk near the end, he also did the boxing booths down the Fair. My mate usedf to live next door to him up Clifton, so I got to know him quite well, he really was a nice bloke when you got to know him, eh, but don't cross him. Unfortuantely he is now in the the big boxing ring in the sky.

  4. Can you all remember the Mods and Rockers era? I was a rocker, my first bike was a BSA C11G, a 250cc bike, I put drop handle bars on it and thought I was the bees knees. I remember rival rocker groups, like the 'aces' and the 'saints' - based in Clifton. Immitation black leather jacket on with the words 'Elvis is King' emblazed on the back in silver studs, a space type crash helmet, Wow! We would go chasing the mods on their Lambrettas and Vespas, festooned wirth mirrors. A trip to Skeg every weekend in summer or Matlock Bath (the only inland seaside resort I know), Eh they were the days vampire2

  6. I was brought up in Clifton, infact we were the 4th family to move there, 1954, my father still lives in the same house. When we moved there Clifton was a nice place to live, but I have to say that it has gone right down hill, a sign of the times I'm afraid, so yes, I am ashamed to say that I was brought up at Clifton. If you mention places like Clifton, Bilborough, St Annes etc there seems to be a bit of a stigma attached. I think that todays society just doesn't have the same values of those of the 50's and 60's.
